Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys’ fur and hooves do not like to stay wet.
Seems like spring is the time of the year our donkeys need the most help with the itchy fur and they are more prone to sores and need us, humans, to be checking them over each and every day.
Bald patches on donkeys normally develop in the late winter and spring but can occur any time of the year. Donkeys have longer hair than a horse. Donkeys are more susceptible to rain rot than a horse. Make sure your donkey has access to shelter as clumps of hair fall out and bald patches develop. Check for lice, ticks, and mites. Oil-based products work much better than powders due to the donkey’s thick and long fur coat.
As soon as the weather is 70 degrees give a good bath with antiseptic soap and cream rinse. I never spray water in my donkeys or horses’ faces. I wash gently with the washcloth. Select Virbac Epi-Soothe Shampoo
If after doing all of the above your donkey still has lice and sores contact your vet. Ask for a full physical and blood test for Cushing’s. Sadly, the immune system is attacked when a donkey, horse, or mules has Cushing’s.

My lovely pet has an itchy spot too! Spring is in the air (at least up here), and it is bothering all the beautiful beasts!

Poor things. Spring should be such a joyful time and yet they get to suffer through it. Wonderful that they have you there to look after them.
Rocket Man is not having any problems this year it was last year. 🙂 I like to share old stories to help people with their donkeys. Only lasted a few days and fur started growing back 🙂
I just cam across this little mini donkey with the all on your page. I just got a mini donkey. Her name is MINNIE. She looks EXACTLY LIKE this gal! All the fat pockets are in the same exact place. Is this YOUR donkey? It would be great if I could find some history on the one I just acquired.
I test my hay and use a slow feeder. Rocket Man is 20 came to me too heavy . Take the weight off slow. Melody@donkeywhisperer.com is my email. He is now way healthier. Will share a new photo of him on another post you just inspired me to write about the slow feeders again. If you need help send me a note at Melody@Donkeywhisperer.com as I am a personal coach, consultant and trainer of humans with donkeys, mules and horses. Here is my website htttp://www.donkeywhisperer.com
Hi Jody, This is Rocket Man before I started testing my hay and using the slow feeder. Mini’s do best when living with another mini for diet reasons and for health in general. If you need help I am here to support you. My website is http://www.donkeywhisperer.com and my e-mail is Melody@donkeywhisperer.com Rocket Man turns 20 this summer and he came to us obese. I can now say proudly he is much healthier and when we move to our new farm where he will live with another mini he will get more fit.
