Congratulations you have prepared your farm for equine!

Now the real work begins. You are the owner of this beautiful equine a donkey, horse or mule. You the owner have responsibilities that must be maintained for the life span of your equine. Here are few issues to consider.

Have I Done My Homework?

The Donkey Whisperer Farm ® trains the owner to train the donkey. This is 100% successful in keeping the donkey(s) on your farm.  When the owner is trained to be a fair leader and have a routine the donkey will stay with the owner and not be re-sold. Trauma can change this for the owner due to health and life issues. But in most cases even trauma victims want to keep their trained donkeys.

Do I Have Time To Train My Donkey?

Donkeys are smart not stubborn. Donkeys require humans to learn behavioral issues, signs of stress, fear and relaxation and have a plan each time we step into their world. Without a skill set the donkey will train the owner. Next the owner is frustrated and gives up. The donkey is sold and may or may not survive. A donkey who cannot have their hooves trimmed, a vet call etc., has a grim life.

Do You Want The responsibility?

Forget about the financial obligations, vet calls, hoof care, dental work, hay, fences, shelters. You can’t leave town! You cant leave your donkey alone without someone to feed and care for your donkeys. It is imperative you create a relationship built on a fair leadership program. All relationships take time and experiences. If we just throw the hay over the fence and provide the basic necessities in life for our donkey we will never become the fair leader our donkey desires. Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys have been on earth for at least 5000 years. Much longer than the horse.

If you want to learn how to train a donkey you must first stop and think about the donkeys evolution and environment. The desert! Donkeys ears are used to hear the predator and to wave the heat away. Donkeys can survive much hotter weather than they can severe cold. Donkeys cannot survive extreme cold with wind chill temperatures in the teens and below 0 without human intervention.

Many donkey owners think the donkey can eat like a horse and be trained like a horse. Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To be Trained, Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm. Horses can out-run the predator. The donkey must be able to think, feel, evaluate and set into motion a plan of action to survive. Yes! Donkeys can problem solve and think around any predator, human, place or thing.

Donkeys first and most frustrating survival gift is the ability to determine a predator or threat quickly. Next the donkey develops a plan of action to out think the predator or human. Donkeys train humans quickly! In a matter of seconds a donkey will determine if a human, object, place, animal or thing is safe. The donkey is seriously into self-preservation and he/she will use his/her brain to survive each and every time he/she feels threatened. If you are going to train a donkey you must learn to think like a donkey. SELF-PRESERVATION IS NUMBER 1 TO THE DONKEY.

Donkeys second survival gift is the ability to eat very little sugar and protein. In the desert there is not much to eat, the ability to survive once again depends on the donkeys metabolism. The desert does not have green grass, lush trees, leaves. The desert has rocks and is hot arid, dusty dry terrain. The hooves were shaped and created for the desert. Donkeys do not do well standing in wet conditions, the hooves like to stay dry.

You are learning how to be a fair leader. A fair leader 100% of the time you are with your donkey. Donkeys will not eat anything if in fear or do not trust us humans. Donkeys cannot be bribed or beat to follow you as a leader. You must earn the respect of your donkey. This takes playing games with your donkey. Custom order the mini, standard, burro, mammoth, horse or mule. We will send the measurement template to you after your order is received. All special order/custom halters will be made in three working days upon receipt of your measurements.

When a donkey bonds to another donkey, animal or human it is for life. Donkeys are deep thinkers, donkeys feel deeply, donkeys can feel our pain and will even smell our leg after surgery. Yes, donkeys are truly one of Gods most amazing animals. 

Donkeys will push the other donkeys out-of-the-way to be first to get our attention when this human animal bond has formed. Years can pass and the donkey will never forget our voice and smell. Never.  I pray that you will share this post to help other people learn about these amazing majestic desert equines, the donkey.

We sell donkey halter/lead lines. Our stick and string is used to touch the donkey never to hit the donkey. Please understand the stick and string is used to desensitize the donkey before sticking our head in the kick zone. Donkeys can kick, forward, backwards and sideways with 3 legs on the ground.

When training, I use only resistance-free techniques. I train the owner to use words, facial expressions, voice and timing. NOT CLICKER TRAINING. Training a donkey can be challenging as donkeys do not learn and respond like a horse. Donkeys are visual learners and are seriously into self-preservation. Donkeys require you to think ahead and have a positive plan and you must move and respond On Donkey Time ™ meaning never drill a donkey. Donkeys gravitate towards firm leadership and clear, calm boundaries. In this way donkeys inspire us to cultivate our finest human qualities.
