Saying Goodbye To Rio

MAA Rio Grande was his registered Mammoth donkey name.

God has brought another donkey home to heaven. Rio was the ambassador for the Mammoth donkey as he was truly a gentle giant. Standing at 16’2 hands tall he was a magnificent donkey. Rio helped train the owner and caretakers of donkeys worldwide in our E-training videos and E-book.

Rio was an introverted donkey personality, he never let out a complete bray ever. Rio suffered from an immune disorder that helped to create a fungus deep inside his hooves. Sadly after two years of working with our veterinarian and farrier, we lost the battle to save his life. Rio came into our life as a baby mammoth donkey he was nine months old. We euthanized and buried Rio on a warm summer evening the summer of 2021 facing the Olympic mountains and our hayfield as this was truly one of his favorite places on our farm.

When donkeys pass to heaven it’s important to remember a few things for the surviving donkey’s health and wellbeing.

  1. Make sure each donkey gets the opportunity to walk up to the the deceased donkey. Closure for donkeys is very important as donkeys can enter depression and anxiety wondering what happened to their buddy.
  2. Watch for depression, is your donkey eating, pooping and drinking? Sadly, donkeys can collic and die from a broken heart and the stress of the death of their buddy.
  3. Please get another donkey for your donkey if your donkey is now living alone. Donkeys are physically, mentally and emotionally healthier when getting to live with their own species.

Catch The Donkey!

The Donkey Whisperer Farm ® trains the owner or caretaker how to train the donkey. All videos are sold with lifetime access and a booklet (pdf).

  1. Learn how to put the halter and lead line on with peace and harmony.  These exercises create trust and relaxation for both the donkey and the human.
  2.  Teach the donkey to stand for the farrier and pick up the feet with no kick or fight.
  3.  Say the word foot and the donkey picks up the foot.
  4.  Stop the donkey from biting, nipping, and swinging the head into me.
  5.  Stop the donkey from dragging the human or bolting.

Watch Our Free Video “Bringing The Donkey Home”

Take Melody Johnson to the farm via any smart device. Print out our book attached to each training video. Stay On Donkey Time ® as donkeys cannot be forced to do anything. We cannot bribe a donkey and we cannot punish a donkey to follow us. The donkey must form a relationship with the human and most of all the donkey must trust us at all times. Never abuse a donkey, never betray a donkey. Learn how to be a fair leader 100% of the time you are with your donkey. If you see another human hurting your donkey or animal stop it. If your donkey watches you do nothing over pain and abuse the donkey will deem you unworthy to be a leader. The leader steps in and stops pain. Pain is ineffective in training animals and humans. Pain teaches to never trust. We want trust 100% of the time we are with our donkey. Trust is earned.

“Horses dream of being trained the way a donkey demands to be trained” Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm ®.

Donkey 102  video on demand trains the owner or caretaker how to problem solve and train the donkey.  Donkey 102 teaches you the owner or caretaker how to use the stick and string (fiberglass leather tip) to touch the donkey never hurt the donkey. A tap to keep on when walking, a wiggle to stop the bolt, desensitizing to prepare for the farrier, and more. This stick is a must-have for your shelter and farm. Seriously an extension of your arm. 🙂

ON DONKEY TIME ® is our business logo! Stay calm, have a plan and be a fair leader.  Never betray a donkey. Never drill a donkey. Do not bring a trainer into your farm or send your donkey to a trainer unless they have studied Donkey 101 & 102 and will never abuse or give pain to your donkey.

Donkeys follow the human they trust and respect. Trust is earned and proven. This is the person who lives on the farm, picks up poop, feeds and cares for the donkey(s).

Sadly donkeys who have no social skills are at high risk for re-sale and meat buyers. Please take the time to learn how to train your donkey. Peace and harmony are guaranteed to come back to the farm. It’s all about the human. Preparation is the key to training a donkey. Donkeys learn at the release of pressure not from pain. The donkey has trained the human. Some donkeys are rescue donkeys meaning they have met the worst kind of human. Donkeys have photographic memories. Donkeys never forget good or bad. Fixing donkeys that have been abused will take Donkey 101 and Donkey 102 and time. No donkey is a throw-away donkey.

Stay ON DONKEY TIME ® never drill or stress your donkey out. Tomorrow will be a better day.

What A Donkey Needs

Take a look at our new Free Video “Bringing Your Donkey Home”

The Donkey Whisperer Farm ® trains the owner or caretaker world-wide how to set the farm up, train and care for donkeys via our on-line courses with E-training Video On Demand and E-books.  Select Our Store to enroll in our courses. Take us to the farm via any smart device including your smart cell phone.  Donkeys evolved from the desert, please learn everything you can to set your farm up, train and feed your donkeys. Donkeys are not horses with long ears. “Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To Be Trained” Melody Johnson, Trainer.

Donkeys come in two’s. After purchasing our donkeys I learned really quickly how limited information is available for the health, care and training of donkeys and mules thus the beginning of the Donkey Whisperer Farm a virtual hot spot of detailed information.

We were going along pretty good with our donkeys and horse until Melody Johnson survived an almost fatal car accident.  Suddenly we could no longer take the donkeys out for long walks.  Rio our mammoth donkey was not old enough to ride. Our donkeys started getting really fat. A fat donkey will suffer serious health issues and eventually death.  Horses need to have their weight monitored too or they will get the same health issues.  Donkeys tend to gain weight much faster than a horse and do not show any sign of illness until they are limping and can’t walk. Donkeys are stoic meaning they will not show pain until it is too late.

Why Share This Information?  Honestly donkeys do not make much money in our world unlike the horse with all the unique professions.  Vet’s really do not have much experience with donkeys in Vet school and the donkey is a left with people guessing what is needed.  Thanks to the horse world the donkeys are starting to benefit from all the equine science medicine.  Please do your part and share information to help a donkey or mule living in your part of the world.

The donkey who is free to eat brush, trees, grazing on green grass will get sick, insulin resistance, laminitis the hoof falls apart, white line, diarrhea, hoof abscesses and colic.  This is all preventable if we understand owning a donkey is like owning an exotic equine we must understand how much hay and what kind of hay to stay healthy.  Donkeys require a low sugar diet with clean water and salt along with exercise.

It is not wise to make donkeys live apart from their buddy. Donkeys bond for life. If the donkey needs to go to the vet take his buddy.

Donkeys evolved in the desert GOD gave them big ears to hear the predator and to swoosh and cool them down in the hot desert heat.

Donkeys Care:

Please keep two donkeys, never one donkey. Donkeys are intelligent and get lonely and bored very easily.  Additionally, donkeys play different with another donkey than any other animal. Donkeys grab the neck in play and in battle. Donkeys need safe toys, a orange traffic cone, rubber bowl, jolly ball. Donkeys grab the neck and play tag and tug.

Low sugar hay no alfalfa hay ever no need for grain if they are not working hard.  Clean water, some clean loose salt keep dry in the shelter.

Hoof trim on a reg. basis just like the horse, vet checkup at least once a year. Dental at least once a year.

Hooves trimmed every six weeks in the spring and summer and seven weeks in the fall and winter.

Do not leave the halter on – teach the donkey to catch you. Leaving the halter on can cause death or self-mutilation.

Need to see the vet at least once a year, health check, shots, teeth, fecal samples.

Sedation can be tricky – Make sure your vet understands how much and the proper doses as death can occur or allergic reaction such as sweating and sneezing.

Gelding a male donkey is vital to a happy life for a donkey, gelding is tricky  Make sure you have a donkey vet. Donkeys must have the testicles tied off or they can bleed to death some can have serious reactions to drugs.

Need the human to be have a friendly relationship with donkey before attempting to train – This does not mean letting the donkey boss the human around it’s all about balance and humane leadership

Need fecal test performed with the vet to see if they need to be wormed – I suggest not worming unless they need it have the fecal test confirm they need it. Why? Over worming causes resistant parasites that can never be killed its a dangerous situation and kills the immune system. The vet can tell you how many egg counts for parasites. Tape worms do not show up so we give ivermectrin once a year after the first frost in the fall to all  of our horses and donkeys.

Shots Rabbies, Tetanus and west nile is absolutely needed please let the vet help you as each donkey and farm is unique depending on where you are traveling and meeting other equine.

Shelter to get out of the heat, wind, rain and harsh weather. Donkeys that get wet constantly will have adverse health issues. Feed in the shelter, give clean water, warm in the winter and salt with minerals.

Equine Dentist at least once a year – Just like us people equine need the oral part taken care of or great infections, loss of life can occur resulting in a bigger vet bill with more tears

Meals to be on time.  We like to use the slow feeder they are never ever screaming and crying for more food as our current paddock is a dry paddock. We have been using the Hay Pillow locked inside the high country slow feeder for over nine years now.

Donkey Whisperer Farm, E-TRAINING take us to the farm with you. Select Donkey 101 & 102 VIDEO ON DEMAND.

Donkeys need the human to understand they think different and react different from the horse.  Donkeys are smart not stubborn. You can not force a donkey to do anything.  Donkeys are seriously into self-preservation. Feet do not move when scared and if really scared they will not eat or drink. Donkeys can be extroverted and over react. Donkeys can jump, kick and rear.

Stay ON DONKEY TIME ®. Never drill, betray or abuse your donkey.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

God Created A Miracle For Me

IMG_4166

GOD, Jesus Christ and his angels spared my life in what can only be called a miracle.

The spring of 2010 I survived a life threatening motor vehicle accident, a large farm truck I call it a (semi-truck hit) full of cow manure slammed into the passenger door of the vehicle I was sitting in. Sadly, the driver of the small truck I was riding in ran a stop sign, leaving me with a life long disability in a matter of seconds.  Before the accident I was trail riding three times a week for 4 hours, I was happy and physically fit.

This disability has left me with the inability to have any core strength. This is a challenge for sure when trying to ride or do anything physical. I suffer from rib spasms, back, pelvis and my feet go numb. Still I am blessed to be here and write to you. GOD is amazing as my husband and me started the Donkey Whisperer Farm ® the summer of 2013.

I was flown by emergency helicopter to Critical Care Hospital in Seattle, WA with life threatening injuries; I remember praying and asking GOD to let me live, I was scared I would die.  My injuries can only be called a miracle from God to be alive, God is great, God creates miracles and I am living proof of his great work.

Injuries:

Three surgeries and blood transfusions in two days as I was dying

Eight broken ribs right and left side some in three places

Four chest tubes inserted in-between the broken ribs

Collapsed lung – Difficult to breathe

Grade V  kidney Tear – Stint Installed and removed, very painful procedure. Grade 5: Shattered or devascularized kidney, ureteropelvic avulsions, complete laceration or thrombus of the main renal artery or vein.

Broken collar-bone

Three large pelvis screws

Pelvic bone shattered three large screws surgically installed as the surgeon told my husband he could bend my pelvis up together like a banana.

Things I am grateful for:

I am most grateful to God for his love, strength, mercy and miracle to save my life and provide me with the opportunity to recover, the strength to endure this pain.  I am very grateful to my husband Scott! The team of doctors and nurses that worked on me as they saved my life.  Several surgeons told me I am a miracle and blessed to be alive. One doctor asked me if I believed in God and I quickly told him about deep faith in Jesus Christ. I was in intensive care for at least 7 days and the hospital for 12 days.  Finally I could go home but once I got home my life was no longer the same as I had no ability to do anything without help and twenty-four hour care in our home not set-up for a person in a wheel chair. Please understand I demanded to go home and with this decision took more work. My husband Scott drove me to Seattle four times a week.

I am grateful to all of the people in my life that helped with our farm, my husband and a close girl friend and her close friend stayed with me day and night in the hospital taking shifts to never leave me alone in the hospital.  Food was brought into our home, prayers, cards, calls, text messages, flowers, balloons and so many visits and prayers.  In the middle of trauma God created a unique support system for us one only GOD could create.

I was unable to put any weight on my right leg or walk confined to the wheelchair for almost three months I slept in a lazy boy chair with pillows propping me up for at least four months and then the hard work began, physical therapy moving from the wheel chair to the walker, from the walker to the cane and then finally I could walk on my own.  I am grateful for my relationship with Jesus Christ as I do not believe I could have physically taken the pain without Jesus holding my right hand. I attended physical therapy three days a week for three years. I wore my equine riding gloves to lift weights. Never Give Up! Today my physical therapy is the farm. The body was made to keep moving. The only problem is when we have a disability we must rest and get up and try again. Never give up, never.

It is my hope that sharing this event will help you believe in Jesus Christ our savior for all things.  I have a gorgeous sign in my home a gift given to me by my close friend “Expect Miracles.”   I believe that nothing is too big for our God nothing…. This is my testimony for Jesus Christ and his mercy and grace. The car accident has left me with pain and a life long physical disability. Disability is real. Some disabilities cannot be seen quickly, all disabilities are real. I have learned to enjoy my life disabled. Some days are better than others. Each day is a gift from GOD as life is fragile and precious.

Mammoth Donkey

Meet Rio our Mammoth donkey. Rio has been in our life since he was nine months old he turns thirteen this summer.

Interesting fact; Mammoth donkeys are rare as they are man-made. Standard or burro donkeys are the normal size donkeys. Miniature donkeys are man-made too. Rio is my riding donkey he stands 16’2 hands tall at the withers not the ears.

Donkeys are human healers. If you ever get the chance to meet a donkey I highly recommend it. Donkeys are truly gifts from God.
