Is It Real Or Fake?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I have lived in the Pacific Northwest my entire life. When my husband saw this tree he said “This is the one”, no watering, no mess. Well we moved over to the other side and I am here to say this is it! I love this fake tree. Easy to setup and no tree died.

Aging is a process for sure, one I was not ready to embrace as we have always cut our own beautiful fresh tree. We are excited to share the fake tree is amazing. Looks real and takes minutes to setup.

Do you have a fake tree or a fresh tree?

Happy Friday

DWF Stick and String

Donkey 102 E-Training Video Series launches our new Donkey Whisperer Farm Training Tool a high quality, ergonomically designed fiberglass stick and string for desensitizing and working intimately with your donkey. It is a mandatory tool for training your donkey to pick up his/her front and back feet and for addressing behavioral issues such as, pushing, crowding, bullying and refusing to come and lead. This tool is the key to being a Fair Leader and building a foundation of trust and respect with your donkey.

The DWF Training Tool Stick and String is not a whip and is never used to punish your donkey. The DWF Stick and String is designed for touching, desensitizing and connecting to your donkey. The DWF Stick and String also acts as a safety device, a boundary, if you will, should you have problems with your donkey pulling, pushing, dragging or violating your personal space. At Donkey Whisperer Farm we teach only holistic, resistance-free training methods and design training tools that are compassionate and support you in building a loving partnership with your donkey.

Did I tell you donkeys are smart not stubborn. Donkeys are visual learners. Adopt a wild donkey and do not be afraid as this is going to be an amazing journey. Your donkey will teach you all about you! Donkeys are healers!

Why train the owner to train the donkey?

The donkey must trust the human before we can train the donkey. Donkeys are thinkers, game players they are not flight equine. This does not mean your donkey will not spook. All donkeys can spook. Many factors come to play when owning a donkey as in all equine the more we can show the donkey we are a fair leader and expose them to our human world the better the donkey will be. Donkeys generally do not enjoy loud music, and chaos. Donkeys are comical and intelligent. “Donkeys are not stubborn they are smart” if your donkey is not learning perhaps it is time for you to learn how to train your donkey.

It’s all about you! Stay ON DONKEY TIME when training your donkey and remember your donkey will learn best when you do not drill. Wait another day and stay consistent in your words, timing and training techniques.

Does A Donkey Need A Hoof Trimmer?

Donkeys need their hooves to be trimmed just like a horse.

In the wild the donkey is walking up to 25 to 35 miles a day. On our farm the donkey is most likely not moving this much. A trimmer who is skilled in donkeys hooves is imperative to your domesticated donkeys health. It is best to keep your donkey(s) on a regular trimming schedule.

Select Donkey Whisperer Farm

Donkeys need the following:

  1. Shelter
  2. Clean water
  3. A dry paddock for most of their day.
  4. Lose clean salt in the shelter
  5. Hay to be tested to come in below 10% sugar.
  6. Never feed alfalfa, hay clippings or people foods, breads, cookies etc.,
  7. Never leave your desert equine the donkey on grass or brush, trees all day. They will get sick and have health problems.
  8. Fecal samples to test for parasites. No parasites no need to worm. Over worming has caused resistant free parasites in our donkey, mule and horse world. This is expensive to fix. Just like taking too many antibiotics in the human world over worming destroys the immune system and causes resistant free parasites.
  9. A vet check for dental and health at least once a year.
  10. Trimmer on a regular basis six weeks in the spring and summer and 7 in the fall and winter living in the Pacific Northwest.

Thinking Of Donkeys as Donkeys Come In Two’s

Do you ever find yourself thinking about donkeys? We have had donkeys in our life for fifteen years now and well it’s hard to remember life without a horse and a couple of donkeys, they are indeed part of our family.

Why Donkeys? Perhaps GOD understood before I did the importance of donkeys in our life as our donkeys are part of our family now.  I have always been a human that likes to learn, digs for information, steps out of the box to try new things and I am naturally creative.   Thank you, Jesus!  The human brain is indeed one of the most important organs GOD gave us.

We are proud to make and sell the best quality and fit donkey rope halters. Each donkey halter is made in the U.S.A. Donkey soft yacht rope halter, lead lines with a brass snap, leather end. Check us out at our store Select Our Store.

Our Miniature and Standard Burro size soft yacht rope halter will fit from age 4 months to full-grown, sold with a matching lead line, brass twist safety snap, black leather end.

Custom/special orders

You will order the halter and let us know you want to measure the head. We will build you a perfect fitting donkey halter made to last a lifetime.

Please send questions to our e-mail at melody@donkeywhisperer.com we are happy to help you.

PLEASE NEVER LEAVE ANY HALTER ON YOUR DONKEY, HORSE OR MULE WHILE NOT IN ATTENDANCE TO AVOID SELF-MUTILATION OR DEATH.

Why are donkeys so special?   Donkeys have a cross on their back, this is special.

Well, they are usually not always but usually more relaxed than the horse and well kinda like a black lab they just want to be loved on, they want to eat, they want to snuggle with their human.  The donkey loves to play tug with their four-legged donkey buddy.  Donkeys love to jump up and grab the neck of their donkey buddy.  Donkeys are donkeys!

Donkeys never forget anything they must be treated with a fair and respectful plan. Never abuse your donkey. Rehabilitation of an abused donkey can takes many, many years and some of these donkeys can become violent towards people they associate with the past abuse. I.e., a smell, man or woman (former abuser), truck, sounds, cigarette. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is real in animals just like people. Donkeys can see in color.

What Do Donkeys Need To Stay Healthy?

1. Clean water fresh water, diet, low sugar and low protein  hay  Never feed donkeys alfalfa hay ever. Hay must be tested to come in no higher than 10% Sugar to keep the exotic desert equine healthy. Exercise is key.

2. Taming – Donkeys need their hooves picked out daily and their feet trimmed at least every 7 weeks

3.  Donkeys need the vet to come and see them at least once a year

4.  Donkeys need their teeth checked at least once a year

5.  Donkeys need us, humans, to check for sores, lice, or a limp – Watch your donkey learn how they move so you can catch problems quickly

6.  Donkeys need clean fresh water every day and in the winter warm water, Donkeys need to lose salt in a dry place. A salt lick will do but will not be as effective to prevent colic.

7. Donkeys need their human to be on time with meals – My donkeys hardly ever bray as they can depend on us to bring their meals, they do not need to remind us ever

8. It is a myth to believe all donkeys bray all day long they don’t bray unless they are calling out to a donkey or they are upset about meals or something else like a predator coming into their pasture. Jacks bray more. Very few jacks (stallion horse world) are worthy of reproduction. Owning a Jack is not for the beginner donkey owner or even the novice. Owning a Jack takes having people to help you manage your farm correctly it is not for the beginner.

9. Donkeys do not enjoy a bath, donkeys seem to not enjoy the water even on the warmest weather.  Our donkeys get one bath a year and I hand wash their face just like my horse, never spray a donkey with a hose in the face

10.  Donkeys ears can be broken and not stand up so be careful when touching them

11.  Donkeys can grow lot’s of thick donkey fur for the winter

Rio our Mammoth donkey age 9 months with my hubby Scott.

12.  Donkeys are looking for a great human leader who will take the time it takes, donkeys are visual learners

13. Donkeys can hear things way sooner than the horse

14. Pick up the poop every day and compost. Do not drag across your pasture until the poop has composted and killed parasites for at least one year.

15. Last but final tip about donkeys; never ever drill a donkey, less is more and remember Donkeys never forget anything – Be careful what and how you train your donkey 🙂 SELECT E-TRAINING DONKEY 101 VIDEO ON DEMAND.

Winter On The Donkey Whisperer Farm Feb 2018

All of the donkeys and horses are snug in their stalls. They have the choice to enter or stay and today they have made the choice to stay inside. The farm is cold, along with an arctic feeling breeze. Walking out the door and looking out our windows I see the beauty of winter and thank GOD we are warm and our donkeys and horses are warm. Warm (clean) water is very important to prevent colic along with some fresh lose salt and a slow feeder with hay.
Warning signs of a donkey, mule or horse needing a blanket and your attention:
  1. SHAKING
  2. Diahreah
  3. Not eating or drinking, urinating
The sky has a light pink and blue tone to it as it is evening. The olympic mountains are simply a beauty for the eyes to see. Nothing in this world is as beautiful as a farm in my opinion. I love the farm. Soon it will be warm and time to cut hay again. Life on the Donkey Whisperer Farm has four-seasons. The bitter winter will end and spring will be back in full force. Select Check The Weather On The Donkey Whisperer Farm (Weather Underground) Thank you for reading the Donkey Whisperer Farm Blog. I enjoy sharing our little farm with the world as each of the animals and the farm is a blessing from Jesus Christ. Today was a great day to rest, read and sit by the fireplace. 🙂 Today was such a blessing as we are finally home. Such a wonderful and beautiful day to sit and watch the snow and the fire. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place to get to live. GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Apples and Pears

Dear Friends,

Apple Season has arrived! As great as they may be for humans this is not great for the domesticated Donkey, Mule or Horse. In fact this may cause DEATH from Colic and/or a huge amount of stress, tears, vet cost or even burying the beloved equine (Donkey, horse or mule).

Never feed grass clippings or bread to your horse, donkey or mule. PLEASE NEVER FEED ANOTHER ANY ANIMAL THAT IS NOT YOUR ANIMAL. Some animals have a form of insulin resistance, most must have a slow change of diet or they can founder, hoof rots out abscess or colic or worse die.

Select grass clipping

Donkeys, Horses and Mules get Sick, belly aches and gas from eating too many apples! Eating too much human food can increase their risk for colic.

This is one of the most important posts I can write. I will do my best to write it in a way to educate and not offend people as the equine (donkey, horse or mule) need us humans to learn. In fact their lives depend on it!

When you drive by a farm please do not make your hot rod scare the equine as they can and do run through a fence in fear. Not to mention the vet bill for falling down and possibly breaking a leg. Please do not throw bread, apples, pears, watermelon, grass clippings, beer bottles or garbage over the fence at the farm animals.

Horses, donkeys and mules will die of colic if not treated quickly! Bread will get wrapped in their intestine and they can die.

IMG_4844

IMG_20150506_094435

Please never stop and feed any equine (animal) anything without the permission of the owner.

Throwing apples or any food over the fence of an equestrian farm can cause death or a huge vet bill for the owners not to mention emotional stress, tears.

IMG_4811

We have video surveillance on the Donkey Whisperer Farm and signs stating DO NOT FEED THE HORSES AND DONKEYS and still I have to tell people not to feed my equine. This is a huge problem and one I think most people who do not own equine just do not understand. You think you are sharing love, in fact you could kill the sweet Donkey, Horse or Mule living near you.

Thank you for sharing and caring.
