Donkey has a lump

Please understand donkeys are not horses with long ears. Donkeys have a unique biological system that needs to be treated by a veterinarian experienced with donkeys. Please be sure and ask your veterinarian to do his/her research before treating a donkey with drugs and surgery. Please ask your veterinarian to check all lumps you find quickly.

What causes sarcoids?

No one knows for sure what causes sarcoids, but we do know that:

  • they are infectious and linked to a virus called ‘bovine papilloma virus’
  • flies play a role in their spread so insect control is important, particularly during the summer months.
  • certain animals are more susceptible than others. All equine can get a sarcoid.

Where are sarcoids found?

Sarcoids are most often found on the head, legs and trunk.  Male donkeys sadly can develop sarcoids on their pennis or sheath.

Sarcoids may develop at sites of wounds and areas where trauma or injury has occurred.

Use your hands to check your donkey for any new lumps regularly. Include this in your daily grooming routine.

Drug Metabolism In Donkeys:

Donkeys digest drugs different from a horse. Donkeys process drugs much faster than the horse. As a result, practitioners should prescribe drugs carefully less is more with donkeys to ensure the donkey does not over dose and die from the drug. Each donkey is a unique individual some donkeys need far less drugs for pain or sedation so again its best to treat each donkey with extreme caution to drugs and sedation.

Donkeys Are High Risk For Equine Metabolic Syndrome

Donkeys evolved from the desert meaning one of their gifts is to survive and thrive on low sugar/protein forage. When donkeys are fed the wrong foods and given the ability to graze twenty-four seven on pasture and brush along with fruits, cereal treats, oats and even vitamins they can gain weight quickly and become obese.

What Is Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) do horses get it?

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a disorder causing the blood insulin levels to become too high along with fat on the body and in the blood. Making it very difficult for equine (horses, donkeys, ponies) to lose weight. Donkeys with EMS produce higher than normal levels of insulin and are slow to return to a normal value.

Donkey side effects:

A fat donkey, cresty neck, fat pockets on the body, diarrhea, drinking more water, chronic hoof abscesses, laminitis, white line disease, cushing’s, laminitis.

How Can I Prevent EMS?

Watch the diet closely, work with your vet to do preventive care such a blood work and Thyro-L for a short amount of time along with diet and exercise.

What Can I Do To Help My Donkey or Horse that has EMS?

Do not starve your equine. Test your hay before you purchase it for the year. A great place to send off hay samples is Equine Analytical Lab. Use a slow feeder we use the Hay Pillow using 1 1/4 holes. Last but most importantly portion control you may need to weigh your hay. If you have a thin donkey needing to gain weight you may have to create another eating arrangement for the obese donkey. Do not let this equine graze on grass or brush ever as the sugar is too high.

Weigh your donkey regularly

Create a track for your equine to walk and run keep moving but not eat fresh grass. A great book is Paddock Paradise.

Donkeys Need To See The Dentist

Why is it important to have your donkeys teeth checked by a vet once a year?

The role of routine dental care is to improve chewing, relieve pain, to treat and cure infection and to promote the general health, productivity and longevity of the donkey, horse or mule. It is important to remember that dentistry includes not only the teeth and mouth but the sinuses, bones of the jaw and the temporomandibular joint.

Facts:

1. Domesticated donkeys can develop high points on their teeth pushing on the gums making them sore and difficult to chew. Eating hay that is not chewed causes colic and can contribute directly to death in donkeys, mules and horses.

2. The gums can become inflamed and need a vet to do oral surgery. Most of the time these donkeys need to go to a hay mash and can no longer eat hay.

3. Sinus health issues are addressed by annual vet exam of the mouth.

If we do not do regular dental care we risk loosing our donkeys early in life. Eating hay that is not chewed properly will cause colic. Senior donkeys can be moved to a hay mash with restrictions to eating hay or straw 100%, these donkeys can graze on fresh grass for limited amounts of time to avoid obesity.

Please find a veterinarian that has experience with donkeys as donkeys digest drugs differently than a horse. Most vet’s in the U.S.A. give a mild sedative before opening the mouth, as it is safer for the donkey and the human.

Thank you for investing in your donkeys.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Donkey Care

Dentist Day!

Did you know donkeys need to see an equine dentist at least once a year? Yes, it’s true! If we provide dental care once a year we are ahead of serious health issues. Please remember to use an equine dentist who has experience with donkeys. As the donkey ages, the teeth start rounding and erupting out and need to be extracted. The equine vet can prevent colic and choke for your donkey.

Please remember donkeys digest drugs differently from a horse. Please be sure and ask lots of questions before giving your donkey drugs.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Thinking About Donkeys – Two Is The Majic Number

TWO IS THE MAGIC NUMBER!

All equines are herd animals, but donkeys are especially bound by strong herd instincts. Donkey’s are considered “Species-Specific” which means they prefer to be with their own kind.

This is why two is a magic number. Two donkeys mean health, happiness and longevity. It has been shown that a single donkey, living alone, is more likely to suffer from psychological and physical health problems than two donkeys living together.

So, if you want less vet bills, less worry, a happy donkey and a healthy donkey, well, two is the magic number!

Donkey Health Tip – MUD

Here Comes The Rain

If your donkey is laying in mud be sure to get the mud off when it drys. Why? Mud has the potential to give sores to equine. The best way to remove the dirt and mud is a brush in the winter. Be gentle around the eyes and ears. We place sawdust down in the high traffic areas and a place to sleep outside.

How nice would it be if I was able to come to your farm and train you how to train your donkey? Please take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102. I train the owner or caretaker how to not only train the donkey for basic social skills. Learn how to stop the bolt, kick and bite. Prepare for the farrier and more.

Donkeys Are Stoic Will Not Show Pain Until It Is Too Late

Donkeys on the whole do not show their feelings of pain in very obvious ways, but behave as a human would who is called ‘stoical’, i.e. tolerating pain without complaint. They may make an initial violent movement of avoidance, but after that they become silent and as nearly as possible immobile in the face of pain and/or fear.

Therefore it is sometimes difficult to know when they are suffering acutely, and their behavior may look like ‘stubbornness’ rather than stoicism.

One indicator of pain or fear can be diarrhea, just as in humans. Since this may also dehydrate the donkey, it will be adding to its problems if it persists. A donkey who stops eating and drinking is at risk for death.

Please call the vet ASAP to save your donkeys life.

Donkeys Evolved From The Desert – COLIC IS LIFE THREATING

DONKEYS EVOLVED FROM THE DESERT – LEARN HOW TO FEED YOUR DONKEY AND KEEP YOUR DONKEY HEALTHY

Donkeys are stoic meaning “Donkeys will not show pain until it is too late.” You must call the vet asap when a donkey is sick. Death comes quickly as the donkey has not shown how sick her or she is. Pick up the poop every day and compost. This way you know how much your donkey is pooping. It is vital to the health and life of your donkey to be alert to your donkeys personality, behavior and life patterns of eating and pooping.

Make sure your neighbors are not feeding your donkey. DONKEYS DIE FROM BEING FED THE WRONG FOODS OR TOO MUCH FOOD OR WOOD, BARK ETC.,

Move the fence and pasture away from people throwing food. Grass clippings, apples, bread etc., can kill your donkey quick.

What are the signs of Colic in a donkey?

Donkeys eyes looked glazed over, head may be low and your donkey looks sick. Or head is moving constantly.

Donkey is refusing to eat and is not acting like his normal behavior off all alone. Not interacting with the rest of the herd or you!

Donkey is pawing, rolling and not stopping this behavior. Some donkeys will roll and paw when bored but this stops quickly. If you see this happening over and over it is time to call the vet. Donkeys die from colic quickly.

Donkey can be shaking

Sweating. A donkey that is sweating is sick and needs a vet asap

Has not pooped. Donkeys should be pooping and urinating often

Donkey refuses to drink or eat. Donkeys love to eat. We must not let a donkey over eat.

Donkey is breathing really fast, check the heart rate

Gums are bright red

What is colic?

Colic is a symptom rather than a disease, and defined as abdominal pain. Colic can be the direct cause of the following issues:

Change of diet – Can not poop. Or blockages meaning food is not being digested, gas

Donkeys  can be cramping and spasming.

Parasites

Pancreatitis

The gut has twisted

Ulcers in the stomach

Hoof Abscess

Rio our Mammoth donkey started limping last Sunday. Donkeys are stoic, by the time they show us they are in pain it is serious. We took Rio into the barn and began our hoof abscess program Select Donkey Hoof Abscess Video On Demand to purchase. Everything I teach in the Abscess Video was taught to me from our veterinarians. The video teaches the owner or caretaker how to get the donkey out of pain quickly. Our PDF booklet can be printed out to take shopping and get all the supplies for your farm.

Please be prepared. Please never let a hoof abscess heal on its own, your donkey, mule or horse needs your support and fast. Sadly, abscesses can cause laminitis in the other hoof from the weight pushed on it. Sadly, donkeys can die from an abscesses that was not treated quickly and properly. Rio is healing and walking really good in his boot. Donkeys must keep moving not working hard, but movement is vital to healing.

If you have soaked and poulticed your equines hoof for three days and nothing comes out (black gunk) on the pad. You must call the Vet!

If we catch a hoof abscess quickly in most cases we can heal the hoof without cutting a hole out. Cutting the hole out should be done by a skilled vet not a farrier or trimmer. Make sure to ask the vet to x-ray so no guessing is done on where to cut the hole out of the hoof. The hoof takes one year to grow out.

A Donkey Hoof Abscess (Abscess Video Training On Demand)

Donkeys evolved from the desert. The donkey was created to live on low protein and low sugar forage. Please test all of your hay or straw before purchasing. We do not feed straw on the Donkey Whisperer Farm ®. Donkeys hooves were created to walk on rocks and hard dry ground, the desert. When the hooves get soft this is an opportunity for bacteria and debrie to enter the hoof. Sometimes a hoof trim can trigger the abscess. Eating too much fresh green grass or the wrong hay can trigger abscesses too. So much to learn to keep the donkey healthy.

Jan 25, 2019 while doing our evening farm check Oboe our rescue donkey had a limp. It’s a hoof abscess I said to my husband Scott. We began working fast to get Oboe out of pain. If you would like to learn how to build a boot for your donkey. Make your own poultice and print out a shopping list to take to the store. Our written PDF is attached with each training video we sell on demand. The best part of our training program videos is you can take me, Melody Johnson to the farm with you via any smart phone or device. We sell all of our videos with lifetime access. We do not rent our videos.

Order Your Donkey Hoof Abscess Training Video On Demand Here www.donkeywhisperer.com

We are not vets. We teach you how to get your donkey out of pain fast. Everything we are teaching you has been taught to us from our vets.

Please call the vet if your donkey is not getting better within three days of soaking and creating a new boot and poultice.

Please do not let anyone cut a hole out without an x-ray to find the infection tract line. A hoof tester is not good enough. The hoof takes one year to grow out after cutting the hole out. Donkeys can tear a ligament, or even fracture a bone, just like the horse.

Pain

Please learn how to get your donkey out of pain quickly and keep the blood flow moving in the foot, prevent colic from not moving. The best pain relief for a donkey is banamine. If you are not careful with drugs the donkey can colic.

Frat Party

FRAT PARTY

Because donkeys are herd animals and are ‘species specific’ their happiness meter increases dramatically when they are paired with another donkey or in a donkey herd. Happiness equates to improved psychological well being and physical health which means fewer behavioral problems and veterinary bills for owners. It is a win/win for both donkeys and their owners/guardians.

But, what happens when donkeys become ‘herd bound’?

Because many donkey owners/caretakers don’t spend time socializing and interacting with their donkeys on a regular basis their donkeys bond and become attached to their donkey companion or herd. Inevitably, when it is time for their donkey to leave their partner or herd the donkey panics, becomes stressed or misbehaves. We have seen far too many disasters when a donkey must be separated from its partner and one or both donkeys are plunged into hysteria. Being ‘herd bound’ is extremely dangerous for both the donkey and the owner!

As donkey owners and guardians we must be able to separate our donkeys and attend to them individually. At some point all donkeys will need to be separated, even temporarily, due to an abscess, illness, injury, diet change, medicating or for the farrier or vet.

Being ‘herd bound’ reflects on the owner NOT the donkey! Donkeys naturally migrate toward the leader of the herd and the strongest member for companionship. There is a natural hierarchy in herd psychology and as with all herd animals donkeys have a strong instinct for safety and survival. If your donkey does not consider you the leader of the herd or his/her partner you cannot expect your donkey to feel safe in your presence. You must be a leader worthy of your donkey’s trust and respect.

The solution for a ‘herd bound’ donkey is your time and patience. Learn to be a leader. Prove to your donkey that he/she can look to you for safety and natural herdsmanship.

Winter On The Donkey Whisperer Farm

Winter has returned to the farm. We are having a wicked freezing snowy, deep snow storm in the Pacific Northwest.  All the donkeys and horses have the choice to go in or out of the stall. All eight equine are standing in their stalls out of the wicked wind chill. Its snowing tiny flakes, the beginning of the storm hit around 8:00 am this morning. Looks like this winter storm will run at least five days or more.

A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we are prepared. We only use the blanket when it is needed. A donkey has arthritis, a donkey is sick, a donkey has vet rest. Planning ahead makes the emergency or trauma a bit easier.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys do not do well in the cold weather we must do our best to help them stay warm and healthy. Our weather is in the teens with the wind chill and this is dangerous for a donkey.

Take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 Video On Demand Training Series. Melody Johnson is a donkey behavior expert and a trainer of humans.  Training the owner or caretaker to train the donkey using resistance free methods. Never abuse, or old cowboy techniques. Donkeys are smart not stubborn. Donkeys have photographic memories. If you are going to work with a donkey you must have a plan. Donkeys are game players.

Did you know donkeys die every winter from the cold? Yes. Donkeys are stoic and do not show pain until it is too late. Preparation is the key. Learning how to be a fair leader. Learning how to train the donkey to trust us to introduce new objects, places, things and people.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys must live on a dry paddock just like the desert with limited time out on the grass. Donkeys cannot eat hay too high in sugar or protein without getting sick. Donkeys cannot stand and eat brush all day and night without getting sick.  Donkeys are seriously easy keepers. If we do not pay attention to the diet the donkey will get fat, obese and develop insulin resistance, fat deposits on their neck and tummy. Once the fat roll breaks on the neck we can never fix this. All of this is preventable. Please read, research and learn how to care for the magnificent and brilliant desert equine the donkey.

Shelter is important for Donkeys

Clean water is a must. Some donkeys do not like a bucket color. Yes donkeys can see in color. Donkeys prefer clean warm water in the winter. Clean is very important. Make sure to keep a little extra hay in the slow feeder. Salt is imperative to drinking water. We chose free lose salt. No selenium in the salt if the hay has selenium. Never feed alfalfa hay to a donkey. No oats, sweet feed, breads, etc., A safe treat is 1 or 2 bites of a one carrot. Thats it. I never give a bite of a carrot for standing and looking cute. I am not a treat dispenser. I give a bite of a carrot for doing something I asked the donkey to do i.e., come to me on 10 acres when I call.

GOD Must Have Needed One More Donkey In Heaven – Goodbye Sweet Galopin

While recovering from a life threatening car accident in 2010 I started teaching for free via Skype how to tame and train a donkey. I started my blog Donkey Whisperer Farm ® in 2010 and the business in 2013, testimoinals.   Martin and Geoff Lyon living in France were one of my first virtual students to teach for free.  Galopin needed to be gelded, I shared how Rio our mammoth donkey almost bled to death from the vet not tying the testicles off he was rushed to a trauma hospital and they saved his life. I shared how important it is the vet has experience in drugs and donkeys, weight etc.

Galopin did not wake up after being sedated. The cause of death is guessed to be too much drugs for his weight or a severe drug interaction as donkeys digest drugs differently than horses. The only way we the owners can know for sure the cause of death is by paying for a necropsy. Galopin touched my heart deeply I am very sad to report he died during the gelding process a few weeks ago.  I have not been able to write about this as well my emotions were bouncing all over the place.  I have spent many hours in prayer for the owners of Galopin as they loved him so very much, they did everything they could do to give this beautiful young donkey a great life.  Death comes to all of us and only GOD knows the date and time.  GOD must have decided he needed one more standard donkey in heaven as Galopin died from the gelding process.  Please pray for Galopins human family, pray for peace and joy to come back into their home.

Warning for gelding donkeys:

Donkeys can have reactions to medications, donkeys can bleed to death after being gelded if the vet does not tie off the the testicles. Donkeys are not horses with long ears.  Sadly, when veterinarians attend school they are seldom taught about donkeys.

When I am pressed on every side by troubles, I am not crushed and broken.  When I am perplexed because I don’t know why things happen as they do I don’t give up and quit. 2 CORINTHIANS 4:8 (TLB)

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!
