  3.  Say the word foot and the donkey picks up the foot.
  4.  Stop the donkey from biting, nipping, and swinging the head into me.
  5.  Stop the donkey from dragging the human or bolting.

Watch Our Free Video “Bringing The Donkey Home”

Take Melody Johnson to the farm via any smart device. Print out our book attached to each training video. Stay On Donkey Time ® as donkeys cannot be forced to do anything. We cannot bribe a donkey and we cannot punish a donkey to follow us. The donkey must form a relationship with the human and most of all the donkey must trust us at all times. Never abuse a donkey, never betray a donkey. Learn how to be a fair leader 100% of the time you are with your donkey. If you see another human hurting your donkey or animal stop it. If your donkey watches you do nothing over pain and abuse the donkey will deem you unworthy to be a leader. The leader steps in and stops pain. Pain is ineffective in training animals and humans. Pain teaches to never trust. We want trust 100% of the time we are with our donkey. Trust is earned.

“Horses dream of being trained the way a donkey demands to be trained” Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm ®.

Donkey 102  video on demand trains the owner or caretaker how to problem solve and train the donkey.  Donkey 102 teaches you the owner or caretaker how to use the stick and string (fiberglass leather tip) to touch the donkey never hurt the donkey. A tap to keep on when walking, a wiggle to stop the bolt, desensitizing to prepare for the farrier, and more. This stick is a must-have for your shelter and farm. Seriously an extension of your arm. 🙂

ON DONKEY TIME ® is our business logo! Stay calm, have a plan and be a fair leader.  Never betray a donkey. Never drill a donkey. Do not bring a trainer into your farm or send your donkey to a trainer unless they have studied Donkey 101 & 102 and will never abuse or give pain to your donkey.

Donkeys follow the human they trust and respect. Trust is earned and proven. This is the person who lives on the farm, picks up poop, feeds and cares for the donkey(s).

Sadly donkeys who have no social skills are at high risk for re-sale and meat buyers. Please take the time to learn how to train your donkey. Peace and harmony are guaranteed to come back to the farm. It’s all about the human. Preparation is the key to training a donkey. Donkeys learn at the release of pressure not from pain. The donkey has trained the human. Some donkeys are rescue donkeys meaning they have met the worst kind of human. Donkeys have photographic memories. Donkeys never forget good or bad. Fixing donkeys that have been abused will take Donkey 101 and Donkey 102 and time. No donkey is a throw-away donkey.

Stay ON DONKEY TIME ® never drill or stress your donkey out. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Teaching A Donkey – Does Age Matter?

Wondering if you can teach an old donkey new things?

The first step in teaching a donkey is taming the donkey, building a relationship built on trust, love, and clear leadership; be a dependable human one who is on time with meals and clean water.  Teaching a donkey to do anything takes patience, timing, emotional control (staying in neutral in your mind), keeping a great sense of humor as donkeys are smarter than some humans 🙂

What does it mean when my donkey comes running at me with his/her ears back?

Important you understand that donkeys are not horses.  Most of the time this means the donkey is excited to see you and playing if your donkey looks angry and has his/her teeth showing in anger than you need to be aware and correct this without abuse.   “Donkeys should not be punished for having their ears back and running at you”, the same as we should not pop them in the face when nipping.  Say NO when they try to nip and mean it when you say it.   Remember safety is most important so pay attention, be plugged in when around your donkey and most importantly enjoy your donkey as a donkey is a gift from GOD.  A well cared for donkey is a donkey that is not abused, this donkey is just like a black lab, they want to be loved on, they want to put their donkey head on your shoulder.

What is the best age to work with a donkey?

Newborn no doubt for imprinting, loving, teaching them to trust us humans but please remember the baby donkey has the attention of a human child.  Small training sessions no more than fifteen minutes and then move on to something the baby donkey loves like a massage etc. 🙂  Donkeys love to be touched, massaged and talked to they are the perfect companion for our human souls.  Our donkeys are like black labs they are always excited to get our human attention but you must understand we have earned the donkeys trust and love.  Relationships take time, take your time.

What is the most difficult age?

Any age after the donkey has been abused by a human or a human authorizing a dog or anything else to torment and hurt the donkey – never forget a donkey never ever forgets good or bad and they are watching to see if you the human will be a great leader and protector or stand by and let them fend for themselves.

Did you know donkeys freeze when scared?

Yes, donkeys can freeze when scared and donkeys can bolt when scared it just depends on the donkey so be prepared to try to help your donkey relax and understand you the human leader will indeed lead and take care of their every need.  Domesticated donkeys need us humans to lead not follow.

Why does my donkey need a purpose to do stuff?

Donkeys are not horses with long ears, donkeys are donkeys.  Donkeys have evolved by stopping and thinking before doing anything they rarely bolt like the horse, remember I said rarely the donkey can get startled and react like a horse but the time they need to calm down is much faster than the horse.

What’s Most Important?

The most important thing I can share with you about training your donkey is to enjoy your donkey.  You chose the donkey the donkey did not choose you!  Everything great in this thing called life takes a bit of hard work and owning donkeys is a gift from GOD in Jesus Christ precious name.  Please remember all animals have feelings, all animals depend on the human owner to take care of them so be a human angel and take the best care of your animals as you possibly can.  How we treat the animals is most important to our most fragile world!

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Please Do Not Hit A Donkey

PLEASE DON’T HIT ME

If hitting a donkey (or any animal for that matter) produced positive results there would be very few naughty or dangerous donkeys. Hitting does NOT work, in fact, hitting your donkey only makes EVERYTHING worse and you, the human, lose every time!!

Hitting a donkey creates a huge disconnect between you and the donkey. The donkey simply moves into a deeper state of indifference, distrust and resentment. And take our word for it, donkeys will remember if you have been cruel, unfair or a poor leader.

We have never met a donkey that was inherently mean and hateful! Donkeys that are simply naughty are usually frustrated that they are not being heard. Donkeys are continuously communicating with us and telling us how they feel, what matter s to them and what they are fearful of. Donkeys will always give us a warning, the question is are WE listening?

Donkeys that bite, kick or strike are in psychological pain, physical pain or a state of heightened fear. They don’t need a ‘strong hand’ or a ‘good whipping’ they need a human that understands herd mentality, donkey psychology and knows how to listen, be patient and is a confident leader.

Even in severe cases of being kicked or bitten always walk away! Don’t escalate the situation by striking back. If you react by hitting or kicking your donkey you are the only one that is going to get hurt (we have seen people break their hands and their toes). Regroup and make a plan. Don’t go back to your donkey until YOU understand donkey psychology, how to build mutual respect and the basics of natural, non-resistant horsemanship (donkeymanship).

The bottom line is: Learn, become a good leader and watch your donkey respond with respect and a willingness to please you.

Preparing A Donkey To Saddle

Training A Donkey To Saddle

Make sure your donkey can do everything in Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand. Foundation exercises will build trust between you and your donkey.

2. Never put the halter on your donkey without the lead line on. Placing the halter on without the lead line on is dangerous. Your donkey is depending on you to teach your donkey to follow you as a leader.

DO NOT LEAVE ANY HALTER ON YOUR DONKEY, MULE OR HORSE WHILE NOT IN ATTENDANCE. Train your equine to catch you. Donkey 101 video on demand.

3. Training a donkey to ride is the last thing you should teach.
4. If you build a solid foundation your donkey will be your partner. Your donkey will follow your words and timing forever. Words, Whoa, Walk-On, Over, Foot, Back-up and Out.

5. Never think you have a trained donkey 100%. No such thing. Everyday is a day to learn and grow with your donkey. Learn Donkey Behavior and Personality. Learn how to control your energy, voice and emotions.

6. Have a plan.  Donkeys can pretend to know nothing with a human who has limited knowledge to donkey personality and behavior traits.  Be consistent. Stay Calm. Stay On Donkey Time ®

7. Every moment you are with your donkey you are training your donkey. Your donkey is studying you.

8. Never Betray A Donkey. Never let anyone hurt your donkey. Be the leader your donkey needs to trust you.

9. You are the smart human. Work hard to show your donkey how smart you are.

10. Enjoy your donkey. Donkeys are gifts from God. Donkeys make us humans better people.  Stay On Donkey Time ®.

Let’s Play

JUST DO IT!

Play is an integral part of donkey health and welfare. Donkeys are extremely playful by nature and can be observed running, jumping, boxing and wrestling with each other when in a herd or when in a partnership.

Play is a vital component to donkey physical and mental health. As with human beings, play is important to the development of the muscle skeletal system including leg strength, joint flexibility, mobility and muscle development, including heart health.

Play also facilitates psychological and emotional health by releasing specific hormones and endorphins in the brain that encourage a feeling of well being, relaxation and even joy.

Here at Donkey Whisperer Farm each donkey is paired with at least one friend or more. No donkey is ever alone. We always encourage donkey owners and caretakers to have at least two donkeys for companionship. We encourage that you match up geldings to geldings and jennies to jennies. Geldings and jennies have a different way of interacting and playing and it is best that they are allowed to bond and play with a same sex partner.

If you only have one donkey, please encourage play by putting enrichment toys around their barn and paddock. Use slightly deflated soccer balls, equine toy balls, construction cones and black rubber feed trays. Please don’t use wood or metal objects. Many donkey owners make the mistake of letting their donkeys play with a stick or tree branches. Sticks and branches can be a favorite toy, but we have seen numerous emergency cases including chokes, splinters in the throat, impacted splinters in the teeth and eye injuries.

Be safe, have fun and lets play!
