Fireworks Your Animals Need You To Have A Plan

Fireworks and Pets Not A Good Combination:

Plan ahead to keep pets safe; owning pets is a huge responsibility and for those of us who have equine (donkeys, horses, and mules) living in rural areas, we must be extra careful. The equine is a flight or fight animal when terrified of death. Meaning; they can get scared when the fireworks start, and the smell is in the air.  Some horses have been known to run into fences.  Locking them in their stalls is the safest when neighbors are shooting off fireworks I turn the radio up and give lots of hay and fresh water. Donkeys have died from fear, yes fear. Colic is a life-threatening matter. Donkeys are stoic will not show pain until it is too late. Do your best to stay calm and keep your donkeys, mules, and horses locked up safe in their stall until the fireworks are over. Long-distance fireworks are not that big of a deal, fireworks right over the farm or barn can kill your equine.

Want to read more tips on pet safety and fireworks?  Select Blue Cross Pets Fireworks for more details.

Dogs and cats can get so scared of fireworks they can run off and not be able to find their way home best to keep them locked in the house too. Our doggies get very stressed, turning the radio up helps, some people tranquillize their dogs until the fireworks are over.  I say do whatever you have to do to keep your pets safe as they don’t understand fireworks.  Please remember animals do not understand fireworks “they are truly scared and think they will die.” It’s our job as the smart human to protect them and take care of them.

What do you do to keep your pet(s) safe during the fireworks?  Please leave a comment to help others.

Steam Hay For A Healthier Horse, Mule and Donkey

Did you know?

  • Even the best quality hay can be full of dirt, dust, mold, and bacteria.
  • Read all about Hay Steamers here.

The Donkey Whisperer Farm ® has two equine suffering from allergies. Our palomino horse Miss Lily and Rio our Mammoth donkey. Allergies are very real for humans and animals. For our equine, this can cause breathing issues and running eyes, itching so bad the face bleeds on the nose and around the eyes, coughing, and hives. Remember to always ask your vet for support with allergies. Our Mammoth donkey takes the dog pill Apquel and this helps 100% of his allergies, we give this to him at night as it makes him drowsy.

The sad part is a hay steamer is expensive. Perhaps one-day hay steamers will be a bit more reasonably priced for all equine to enjoy the benefits.

Plowing The Hay Field

We purchased our farm (raw land) in 2013 for our small business the Donkey Whisperer Farm ®.  Yesterday we hit a milestone “Plowing The Hay Field” the first step to growing premium low sugar/protein hay for our donkeys and horses. We will never have weeds or alfalfa in this hay ever again.  In the spring of 2020 we will plant orchard seeds.  God willing we will have some beautiful healthy hay for our donkeys and horses.

The next time you buy a bale or more of hay I hope you take a moment to thank the farmer that worked really hard to provide you with your hay. Growing and harvesting hay is really hard work and expensive. No wonder hay cost so much in the Pacific Northwest. Premium hay will always cost more as it takes so much more time and effort to produce.

Hay or straw cannot be looked at and guessed to determine sugar or protein we must test it. The color means nothing, the fact it is straw means nothing.  Send hay samples to Equine Analytical.

Donkeys evolved from the desert making them seriously easy keepers. Donkeys cannot eat high sugar/protein hay or straw without getting obese, sick and finally dying. Our hay will test in at 10% or lower in sugar/protein, thank you Jesus.

A few photos of my husband Scott working really hard for three days to get this field plowed. Seems the field has not been plowed in at least thirty years or longer.

We look forward to sharing our beautiful hay in the spring and summer of 2020.

God bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Death With Dignity For Our Donkey, Horse or Mule

Living the farm life is a blessing as farms are expensive to maintain, our world has become very expensive. The life of a farmer is amazingly difficult as each day something new is left at our feet. A farmer must pray, plan and let go. Nothing is more difficult than working for a year and having the weather destroy crops or livestock.

I teach the owner or caretaker worldwide how to care for the donkey and train and maintain the donkey. Everything we do or do not do will affect the health of our livestock emotionally, physically and mentally. Here on the Donkey Whisperer Farm ® we work closely with our veterinarian and farrier to ensure our donkeys and horses are living in optimum health.

Our Life is in God’s hands, each day is fragile and precious for humans and animals.

Have A Plan:

When a donkey, horse or mule dies it is very important to let the rest of the herd smell and see the equine has passed. If we do not provide closure the animals will live in emotional distress crying and looking for their pasture buddy. Even when one of our dogs pass we let the other dogs say goodbye. Its only fair.

You See Animal Abuse We See Human Abuse

Our world has changed dramatically in how we care and treat animals. We now have business catering to all aspects of pet care, food and behavior training for humans.  First we must train the human, next the human trains the animal.

Humans who abuse animals are not merely signs of a minor personality flaw, but are rather symptomatic of a deep mental disturbance. Cruelty to animals has been recognized as an indicator of a dangerous psychopathy that claims both animal and human victims.

Donkeys are called donkey, burro or ass short for Equus africanus asinus. The donkey is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae. Scientific nameEquidae The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African wild ass, E. africanus.  Asses were first domesticated around 3000 BC, probably in Egypt or Mesopotamia, and have spread around the world.

The letter also warned that any treats – even apples and carrots – fed to horses without the owner’s permission could be deadly because horses can have food allergies like humans.

DO NOT FEED HORSES GRASS CUTTINGS!!!
This is horrendous and we’re all devastated. Our gorgeous, healthy, happy and much loved family horse Boston has been killed by somebody feeding our horses a pile of grass cuttings last night. He was the best horse in the world and we can’t believe he’s gone. The worst part is knowing that this could have been prevented and our lovely Boston could be with us now if he hadn’t been fed accidentally and unknowingly this way. I understand that people who do not have horses will not understand the severity of this but I’m hoping I can reach a few by sharing our story.
PLEASE DO NOT FEED HORSES GRASS CUTTINGS!!!

I’ve been asked to expand on the reasoning for not feeding horses cut grass which I thought this was a good idea as I would like to possibly prevent something like this happening again with someone else, if I could:

Because cut grass is much smaller than grass taken up by horses themselves, a horse eating cut grass wouldn’t chew it and would gorge themselves quickly on it. This would result in saliva not being added to the cut grass and “diluting” it before it reaches the stomach. Cut grass also ferments (which is why it can be warm to touch) and along with the saliva not being added, gives off gases inside the stomach. These gases cause the stomach to expand to the point of rupture in severe cases like ours with Boston, killing the horse. If the stomach doesn’t rupture due to not as much grass having been eaten, it would instead cause colic in the horse which is dreadful pain in the abdomen which could then lead to killing the horse later too however colic can be treatable.
Horses also do not have a “vomit” reflex meaning they can’t take up the harmful substances once eaten. Another point would be if a horse has been given lawn mower cuttings. These cuttings may also have different plants in, other than grass which could lead to the horse eating kinds of plants that are commonly found but that are poisonous to them and would have otherwise been avoided by the horse due to not being able to take back up the substances.

I hope this post spreads so people can understand how horrific this is. Thank you for reading.

Does A Donkey Need A Hoof Trimmer?

Donkeys need their hooves to be trimmed just like a horse.

In the wild the donkey is walking up to 25 to 35 miles a day. On our farm the donkey is most likely not moving this much. A trimmer who is skilled in donkeys hooves is imperative to your domesticated donkeys health. It is best to keep your donkey(s) on a regular trimming schedule.

Select Donkey Whisperer Farm

Donkeys need the following:

  1. Shelter
  2. Clean water
  3. A dry paddock for most of their day.
  4. Lose clean salt in the shelter
  5. Hay to be tested to come in below 10% sugar.
  6. Never feed alfalfa, hay clippings or people foods, breads, cookies etc.,
  7. Never leave your desert equine the donkey on grass or brush, trees all day. They will get sick and have health problems.
  8. Fecal samples to test for parasites. No parasites no need to worm. Over worming has caused resistant free parasites in our donkey, mule and horse world. This is expensive to fix. Just like taking too many antibiotics in the human world over worming destroys the immune system and causes resistant free parasites.
  9. A vet check for dental and health at least once a year.
  10. Trimmer on a regular basis six weeks in the spring and summer and 7 in the fall and winter living in the Pacific Northwest.
