Standard donkey — Tuba and Melody Johnson

We are deeply saddened to share that Tuba our rescue donkey age is estimated to be in his thirties has passed away. God in Jesus Christ precious name has brought home another precious donkey to heaven.

Tuba was healthy no signs of illness and than boom he started to have grand mal seizures. Our veterinarian came quickly and was able to administer medication to help him for a few hours. Early in the morning the grand mal seizures returned with a furry, we made the decision to have our vet humanely euthanize him. No more pain and suffering Tuba you are in heaven now.

What does donkeys are stoic mean? Donkeys unlike the horse will never show us pain until in most cases it is way too late making keeping donkeys healthy truly more challenging. We had absolutely no warning sign that Tuba was not feeling well, he ate his breakfast and dinner like normal. Tuba went out on the big paradise paddock track and proceeded to run and play with Oboe his bonded companion while the miniature donkeys grazed on the track. That evening Tuba had grand mal seizers, our vet promptly came and tried to stop the seizures within hours we made the decision to euthanize him. Tuba was truly a special donkey and the leader of Oboe his bonded companion. We miss him deeply and thank God he did not suffer.

What We Must Do When A Donkey Dies?

Donkeys are emotional beings and have excellent memories. It is vital that you put the halter/lead line on and walk the living donkeys buddies up to the body to say goodbye. This step is really important to give closure. Next it is vital that this donkey is not living alone get another donkey asap. Donkeys can die from grief and colic stress. Donkeys can go into a depression stop eating and drinking, have a glazed look in their eyes. Spend as much time as you can with your living donkey and help him/her through the grief.

I met Tuba and Oboe bonded pair of standard donkeys (Tuba 3rd donkey to the right Oboe butt) for the first time in 2008 as I was called asked to try and help the owners who were not able to halter or catch the donkeys. I went to the farm with the intention of teaching the owners how to tame and train Oboe & Tuba so they could stay in their forever home. Sadly they had tried horse methods on the donkeys that clearly did not work and the owners were frustrated with donkey behavior. I began working with the boys and was making great progress with them but sadly the owners did not want to learn as they had small children and a business leaving no time for the donkeys. I helped to get these two boys into a donkey sanctuary as our farm at the time was not big enough to take more equine. In 2014 we moved to our property in Sequim, WA I promptly brought Oboe and Tuba home to live with us in their forever home with Rio our Mammoth donkey on the Donkey Whisperer Farm ®. I always said God has a sense of humor as their names Oboe and Tuba fit Melody. 🙂

After Tuba passed we moved Oboe in with our miniature donkeys to help him. Luckily the miniature donkeys and our standard donkeys Oboe and Tuba have been spending lots of time together on the paradise paddock track. Please remember when a bonded pair of donkeys lose their companion it is vital to move the donkey in with another donkey quickly. Donkeys are very emotional and can stop eating, drinking and next is colic. Spend as much time with your donkey helping them move past the loss of the beloved companion. It is very important that all of the donkeys in the herd are able to smell the deceased donkey before burying the donkey. Why? Donkeys will cry out for a donkey that disappears if they do not know what happened and can stop eating and drinking. Its truly one of the hardest things to do loose a donkey, mule or horse. We thank God for his peace and strength to handle this pain and suffering. Tuba is in no more pain, we believe he is in heaven with Rio our mammoth donkey.

Are you a city person or a farm person?

Living on a farm seems to be a simpler way of life in so many ways living with covid our farm is truly a blessing. For us, the Covid was not much different than our normal life. You see, we have so much to do on the farm, each day the donkeys and horses and doggies need to be fed and cared for. Last spring my husband Scott planted the seed (hay) in the field during the beginning of the pandemic. While city folks were trying to find ways to adapt we were just living our natural way of life. The sad part was we could not have visitors on the farm, we look forward to having our most fragile world return to normal.

If you are having a hard time finding anything positive in 2020 let’s think outside the box. It’s easy to get caught up in what’s wrong in our lives and miss what’s positive or going well. If you have lost a loved one in 2020, I am deeply sorry for your pain I pray GOD gives you peace. I truly understand suffering and pain and my heart breaks for your pain. Please know this too shall pass. Jesus will bring peace “Start each day in prayer, meditating on the good things in your life.” Thank Jesus for something good in your life every day, God loves all of his children deeply.

Introducing Rocket Man, a miniature donkey gelding, he just turned twenty-six years old. Rocket Man has been in our life since he was thirteen years old. When Rio our Mammoth donkey was weaned from his mom, Rio bonded to Rocket Man. Rocket Man was a jack on the breeding farm in his early years.

Rocket Man has the ability to sing when talking and he can bray. He is the only donkey on our farm that sings and he can find anything to get that special spot for a scratch. He is a super special donkey. Did you know some donkeys never bray? Yes, the introverted donkey does not bray. Rio our Mammoth donkey has never ever let out a full-bray and he is fourteen years old. DONKEYS EVOLVED FROM THE DESERT – LEARN HOW TO FEED YOUR DONKEY AND KEEP YOUR DONKEY HEALTHY

Donkeys are stoic meaning “Donkeys will not show pain until it is too late.” You must call the vet asap when a donkey is sick. Death comes quickly as the donkey has not shown how sick her or she is. Pick up the poop every day and compost. This way you know how much your donkey is pooping. It is vital to the health and life of your donkey to be alert to your donkeys personality, behavior and life patterns of eating and pooping.

Make sure your neighbors are not feeding your donkey. DONKEYS DIE FROM BEING FED THE WRONG FOODS OR TOO MUCH FOOD OR WOOD, BARK ETC.,

Move the fence and pasture away from people throwing food. Grass clippings, apples, bread etc., can kill your donkey quick.

What are the signs of Colic in a donkey?

Donkeys eyes looked glazed over, head may be low and your donkey looks sick. Or head is moving constantly.

Donkey is refusing to eat and is not acting like his normal behavior off all alone. Not interacting with the rest of the herd or you!

Donkey is pawing, rolling and not stopping this behavior. Some donkeys will roll and paw when bored but this stops quickly. If you see this happening over and over it is time to call the vet. Donkeys die from colic quickly.

Donkey can be shaking

Sweating. A donkey that is sweating is sick and needs a vet asap

Has not pooped. Donkeys should be pooping and urinating often

Donkey refuses to drink or eat. Donkeys love to eat. We must not let a donkey over eat.

Donkey is breathing really fast, check the heart rate

Gums are bright red

What is colic?

Colic is a symptom rather than a disease, and defined as abdominal pain. Colic can be the direct cause of the following issues:

Change of diet – Can not poop. Or blockages meaning food is not being digested, gas

Donkeys can be cramping and spasming.

Parasites

Pancreatitis

The gut has twisted

Ulcers in the stomach

Hoof Abscess

Rio our Mammoth donkey started limping last Sunday. Donkeys are stoic, by the time they show us they are in pain it is serious. We took Rio into the barn and began our hoof abscess program Select Donkey Hoof Abscess Video On Demand to purchase. Everything I teach in the Abscess Video was taught to me from our veterinarians. The video teaches the owner or caretaker how to get the donkey out of pain quickly. Our PDF booklet can be printed out to take shopping and get all the supplies for your farm.

Please be prepared. Please never let a hoof abscess heal on its own, your donkey, mule or horse needs your support and fast. Sadly, abscesses can cause laminitis in the other hoof from the weight pushed on it. Sadly, donkeys can die from an abscesses that was not treated quickly and properly. Rio is healing and walking really good in his boot. Donkeys must keep moving not working hard, but movement is vital to healing.

If you have soaked and poulticed your equines hoof for three days and nothing comes out (black gunk) on the pad. You must call the Vet!

If we catch a hoof abscess quickly in most cases we can heal the hoof without cutting a hole out. Cutting the hole out should be done by a skilled vet not a farrier or trimmer. Make sure to ask the vet to x-ray so no guessing is done on where to cut the hole out of the hoof. The hoof takes one year to grow out.

JUST DO IT!

Play is an integral part of donkey health and welfare. Donkeys are extremely playful by nature and can be observed running, jumping, boxing and wrestling with each other when in a herd or when in a partnership.

Play is a vital component to donkey physical and mental health. As with human beings, play is important to the development of the muscle skeletal system including leg strength, joint flexibility, mobility and muscle development, including heart health.

Play also facilitates psychological and emotional health by releasing specific hormones and endorphins in the brain that encourage a feeling of well being, relaxation and even joy.

Here at Donkey Whisperer Farm each donkey is paired with at least one friend or more. No donkey is ever alone. We always encourage donkey owners and caretakers to have at least two donkeys for companionship. We encourage that you match up geldings to geldings and jennies to jennies. Geldings and jennies have a different way of interacting and playing and it is best that they are allowed to bond and play with a same sex partner.

If you only have one donkey, please encourage play by putting enrichment toys around their barn and paddock. Use slightly deflated soccer balls, equine toy balls, construction cones and black rubber feed trays. Please don’t use wood or metal objects. Many donkey owners make the mistake of letting their donkeys play with a stick or tree branches. Sticks and branches can be a favorite toy, but we have seen numerous emergency cases including chokes, splinters in the throat, impacted splinters in the teeth and eye injuries.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys have been on earth for at least 5000 years. Much longer than the horse.

If you want to learn how to train a donkey you must first stop and think about the donkeys evolution and environment. The desert! Donkeys ears are used to hear the predator and to wave the heat away. Donkeys can survive much hotter weather than they can severe cold. Donkeys cannot survive extreme cold with wind chill temperatures in the teens and below 0 without human intervention.

Many donkey owners think the donkey can eat like a horse and be trained like a horse. Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To be Trained, Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm. Horses can out-run the predator. The donkey must be able to think, feel, evaluate and set into motion a plan of action to survive. Yes! Donkeys can problem solve and think around any predator, human, place or thing.

Donkeys first and most frustrating survival gift is the ability to determine a predator or threat quickly. Next the donkey develops a plan of action to out think the predator or human. Donkeys train humans quickly! In a matter of seconds a donkey will determine if a human, object, place, animal or thing is safe. The donkey is seriously into self-preservation and he/she will use his/her brain to survive each and every time he/she feels threatened. If you are going to train a donkey you must learn to think like a donkey. SELF-PRESERVATION IS NUMBER 1 TO THE DONKEY.

Donkeys second survival gift is the ability to eat very little sugar and protein. In the desert there is not much to eat, the ability to survive once again depends on the donkeys metabolism. The desert does not have green grass, lush trees, leaves. The desert has rocks and is hot arid, dusty dry terrain. The hooves were shaped and created for the desert. Donkeys do not do well standing in wet conditions, the hooves like to stay dry.

Donkeys cannot be bribed or beat to follow you as a leader. You must earn the respect of your donkey. This takes playing games with your donkey. We are now selling handmade Donkey Rope halter/lead lines with brass snap, leather end and each is made in the U.SA. by our contractor. Our measurements will fit from age 4 months to full-grown for the mini or standard, burro size donkey.

Custom order the mini, standard, burro, mammoth, horse or mule. We will send the measurement template to you after your order is received. All special order/custom halters will be made in three working days upon receipt of your measurements.

What happens if my halter/lead line gets dirty?

Simply wash in a bucket of soapy water and let dry
