Thinking about sun protection for your donkey?
Sunburn prevention is essential for donkeys in the hot summer, especially for pink-skinned donkeys, white donkeys, and painted donkeys. All colored equines need cool, clean water, salt with minerals, and shelter during extreme heat. Leaving fair or pink-skinned equines out in prolonged UV exposure can trigger sunburn, skin cancer, blisters, and inflammation.
Sunburn prevention for donkeys, mules, and horses:
- Apply sunscreen designated for high sun UV index to all exposed skin. Use a UV prevention fly mask and sheet.
- Provide shelter, fans lifted high out of reach from the donkey’s face, cool, clean water, and salt with minerals.
- Provide shelter for all equines.
- Prevent Heat Stress
- Provide clean, cool water, salt with added minerals. Remember, if your hay sample shows no selenium, get the salt with selenium.
- Check the body daily for new sores.
- Pick up the poop daily, compost away from equine, cover with a tarp. We have been using Fly Predators since 2007 as they work.

Excellent suggestions! We all have to take care of our precious animals. 🙂
