Endorphin Training Donkeys, Mules and Horses – All animals and Humans
The brain is powerful for animals and humans. A bite of our favorite foods is always going to make us feel better for animals and humans. Why is the attitude and mood changed? A massage for animals and humans release chemical change in the brain too it’s due to endorphins. Endorphins in the brain sending signals that feel good a sensation. Working with donkeys, horses and mules just became easier. Endorphins are a natural mood changer.
Endorphins are natural stress fighters are safe narcotics for animals and humans. The brain wants more endorphins as it feels good, helps relax and boosts the immune system. This is a powerful training aide for donkeys. Donkeys are seriously into self-preservation.
Question
Melody, I am worried my donkey will become nippy and bite! I train the owner or caretaker to train the donkey before attempting to give a safe bite of a carrot. One bite for doing something. Never for a try. Humans who are treat dispensers will never be a fair leader. The donkey will quickly do or not do exactly what the donkey wants to do.
Donkey 101 & 102 Trains the Owner or Caretaker To Train The Donkey
Learn how to read your donkeys behavior for signs of stress, relaxation, triggers and personality. Learn how to follow the three second rule. Learn how to give a bite of carrot or a rub on the withers. Training a donkey, mule or horse is all about the human. When you study and learn how to become a fair leader the animal naturally follows you. Donkeys who are in fear will never eat from your hand as anything new takes time. Take Melody Johnson to the farm with you using any smart phone or device. All videos are sold with lifetime Access.
Training Tip
The donkey handshake is on the withers. Stay away from the face and eyes until your donkey trusts you.
If hitting a donkey (or any animal for that matter) produced positive results there would be very few naughty or dangerous donkeys. Hitting does NOT work, in fact, hitting your donkey only makes EVERYTHING worse and you, the human, lose every time!!
Hitting a donkey creates a huge disconnect between you and the donkey. The donkey simply moves into a deeper state of indifference, distrust and resentment. And take our word for it, donkeys will remember if you have been cruel, unfair or a poor leader.
We have never met a donkey that was inherently mean and hateful! Donkeys that are simply naughty are usually frustrated that they are not being heard. Donkeys are continuously communicating with us and telling us how they feel, what matter s to them and what they are fearful of. Donkeys will always give us a warning, the question is are WE listening?
Donkeys that bite, kick or strike are in psychological pain, physical pain or a state of heightened fear. They don’t need a ‘strong hand’ or a ‘good whipping’ they need a human that understands herd mentality, donkey psychology and knows how to listen, be patient and is a confident leader.
Even in severe cases of being kicked or bitten always walk away! Don’t escalate the situation by striking back. If you react by hitting or kicking your donkey you are the only one that is going to get hurt (we have seen people break their hands and their toes). Regroup and make a plan. Don’t go back to your donkey until YOU understand donkey psychology, how to build mutual respect and the basics of natural, non-resistant horsemanship (donkeymanship).
The bottom line is: Learn, become a good leader and watch your donkey respond with respect and a willingness to please you.
Because donkeys are herd animals and are ‘species specific’ their happiness meter increases dramatically when they are paired with another donkey or in a donkey herd. Happiness equates to improved psychological well being and physical health which means fewer behavioral problems and veterinary bills for owners. It is a win/win for both donkeys and their owners/guardians.
But, what happens when donkeys become ‘herd bound’?
Because many donkey owners/caretakers don’t spend time socializing and interacting with their donkeys on a regular basis their donkeys bond and become attached to their donkey companion or herd. Inevitably, when it is time for their donkey to leave their partner or herd the donkey panics, becomes stressed or misbehaves. We have seen far too many disasters when a donkey must be separated from its partner and one or both donkeys are plunged into hysteria. Being ‘herd bound’ is extremely dangerous for both the donkey and the owner!
As donkey owners and guardians we must be able to separate our donkeys and attend to them individually. At some point all donkeys will need to be separated, even temporarily, due to an abscess, illness, injury, diet change, medicating or for the farrier or vet.
Being ‘herd bound’ reflects on the owner NOT the donkey! Donkeys naturally migrate toward the leader of the herd and the strongest member for companionship. There is a natural hierarchy in herd psychology and as with all herd animals donkeys have a strong instinct for safety and survival. If your donkey does not consider you the leader of the herd or his/her partner you cannot expect your donkey to feel safe in your presence. You must be a leader worthy of your donkey’s trust and respect.
The solution for a ‘herd bound’ donkey is your time and patience. Learn to be a leader. Prove to your donkey that he/she can look to you for safety and natural herdsmanship.
One of the most wonderful days for donkeys owners is the day we bring our donkeys home. Watch my free YOUTUBE video Bringing Your Donkey HomeDonkeys are healthier emotionally, physically and mentally when they have another donkey to grab the neck and play tag. Eat and groom on the withers. One of the first things we must do is get the farrier on a regular schedule to trim the hooves.
In most cases the donkey has not had any form of training for hoof care or the training was used with pain. Donkeys who are trained with pain will remember the pain, making the farrier day difficult. Can this be fixed? Yes. I train the owner or caretaker how to learn donkey behavior, personality and learn stress and relaxation signs. Each of my students can learn how to do an exercise with their donkey and then take me to the farm with them using any smart phone or device. Each video comes with a written book a PDF to learn. I am training the owner or caretaker to train the donkey.
How Often Do We Trim The Hoof?
Six weeks in the spring and summer as the hoof grows faster during the warm seasons.
Seven in the fall and winter.
Preparation is the key to farrier day.
Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand with our stick and string trains the owner or caretaker how to train the donkey. Learn how to prepare for the farrier before he/she arrives. Select Our Storeto order.
The farriers job is to balance the hoof and trim the hoof. Never to train your donkey. If you expect your farrier to train your donkey this will be a sad day. The donkey must be prepared and trust the human before the farrier work begins.Preparation and quality exercises in Donkey 101 & 102 will prepare your donkey for the farrier. Please do not expect the farrier to train your donkey. Set your donkey up for success. His life depends on you and your training as re-homing a donkey that cannot get the hooves done and will not come to humans is most difficult.

“Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To Be Trained” Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm.
We have finished three tracks paddock paradise for our horses and donkeys. The tracks help our donkeys and horses keep walking and exercising. Test your hay before purchasing for the desert equine the donkey. If your donkey is getting fat pockets, fat neck or a big tummy. You must learn how to keep your donkey healthy.
The Donkey Whisperer Farm is working on a new video “Bringing Home The Donkey”.
Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys have been on earth for at least 5000 years. Much longer than the horse.
If you want to learn how to train a donkey you must first stop and think about the donkeys evolution and environment. The desert! Donkeys ears are used to hear the predator and to wave the heat away. Donkeys can survive much hotter weather than they can severe cold. Donkeys cannot survive extreme cold with wind chill temperatures in the teens and below 0 without human intervention.
Many donkey owners think the donkey can eat like a horse and be trained like a horse. Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To be Trained, Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm. Horses can out-run the predator. The donkey must be able to think, feel, evaluate and set into motion a plan of action to survive. Yes! Donkeys can problem solve and think around any predator, human, place or thing.
Donkeys first and most frustrating survival gift is the ability to determine a predator or threat quickly. Next the donkey develops a plan of action to out think the predator or human. Donkeys train humans quickly! In a matter of seconds a donkey will determine if a human, object, place, animal or thing is safe. The donkey is seriously into self-preservation and he/she will use his/her brain to survive each and every time he/she feels threatened. If you are going to train a donkey you must learn to think like a donkey. SELF-PRESERVATION IS NUMBER 1 TO THE DONKEY.
Donkeys second survival gift is the ability to eat very little sugar and protein. In the desert there is not much to eat, the ability to survive once again depends on the donkeys metabolism. The desert does not have green grass, lush trees, leaves. The desert has rocks and is hot arid, dusty dry terrain. The hooves were shaped and created for the desert. Donkeys do not do well standing in wet conditions, the hooves like to stay dry.
