Donkeys Cannot Handle Severe Cold Wet Wind

donkey blanket

miniature donkey blanket

Did you know that donkeys are pretty fragile compared to the horse? Yes, it’s true. Donkeys evolved from the desert; donkeys seek shelter during extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain. Donkeys cannot tolerate extreme wet and wind chills. Donkeys are prone to hyperthermia and frostbite much faster than horses. Even fat donkeys can have life-threatening issues if we do not take the safety measures needed. Why? When the metabolism is compromised due to obesity or cushings the immune system is destroyed, making it impossible for donkeys to regulate temperature changes.

Signs a donkey needs a blanket; shivering, shaking, freezing ears, standing will not move, tail tucked.

How do I measure my donkey for a blanket?

Order the blanket weight based on the weather, including the wind chill.

Choosing A Blanket Weight (light, medium, or heavy) Based On The Temperature Outside:
