Did you know that Donkeys are more likely to be hypother-mic than horses? Sadly donkeys can move quickly intoHypothermia. Meaning their body temperature drops and can not go back to a normal temperature.
What happens if a donkey survives hypothermia? Laminitis, the hoof turning soft rotting off to the point the donkey needs prosthetic.
Thinking your fat donkey is safe? Metabolic health issues can cause the donkey to not be able to regulate the extreme cold. Please be prepared for severe cold and wind chills.
Signs a donkey needs a blanket;
Shivering, shaking and blowing diarrhea.
Preventative care for the winter:
Shelter, slow feeder, warm clean water, salt and blankets (2).
A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we are prepared before the trauma hits. Measuring for a blanket, selecting the correct weight of a blanket, finding a donkey blanket that fits, taming the donkey to wear a blanket and finally waiting for shipping.
Freezing Weather With A Horrific Wind Chill Is An Emergency For Most Farm Animals.
“A blanket is like a fire extinguisher, we are prepared before the emergency hits” Melody Johnson. Some equine (donkeys, horses and mules) need a blanket until the freezing temps leave. Shivering, shaking and blowing diarrhea means they need a blanket. As hypothermia begins to set in, the core body temperature begins to drop.
Basic Care Needed:
Provide a slow feeder with hay, clean warm water and free lose salt. If you do not have an electric bucket to plug in bring your equine warm clean water within two hours of each meal.
Shut the door in the shelter if you have high winds with below 0 freezing temperatures. Frost bite can be prevented. Ordering a blanket at the last minute is almost impossible due to shipping and roads etc., plan ahead. Frostbite is also more common in donkeys and mules that have longer ears.
Providing shelter from wind and moisture is the single most important thing you can do.
Watch the footing for ice. Ice accidents can become a serious medical emergency.

Owning a donkey is challenging as well most halters are made to fit a horse. I make custom adjustable soft yacht rope halters made to fit aminiature or standard/burro size donkey with a matching lead line, stainless steel twist safety snap and a real black leather end. Baby donkeys, mammoth donkeys, mules and horses can choose build a halter/lead line. I teach you how to measure the head for a perfect custom fit.
A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we have it ready to go in case of an emergency. Please remember (2) blankets for each donkey is important as there is no blanket 100% waterproof the entire winter season. Leaving a wet blanket on any equine will cause laminitis can contribute to colic and death. Please understand donkeys are stoic will never show any sign of sickness or pain until in most cases it is too late.
Did you know that blankets are made for horses, ponies and foals? Yes! Due to the donkey having a small chest, not having any withers and the round belly it can be a challenge to get a good fitting blanket that is quality for a donkey. Again it is very important we measure and find quality blankets before the emergency hits. I attach the leg straps as donkeys love to grab the blanket in play the straps keep the blanket on. I am working with Kensington Protective Products to make donkey blankets, donkey fly masks, donkey fly leg boots hopeful we will be able to sell 100% donkey gear soon.
Blanketing Donkeys In The Rain: No blanket is 100% waterproof in the rain. I do not blanket in the rain. I provide shelter for my donkeys in all seasons. Place hay, water and salt into the shelter so the donkeys are not afraid of the shelter. Watch for a donkey bully kicking the donkeys out. You may need more than one shelter depending on the size of shelter, herd size and donkey bully.
Taming the donkey to accept the cloth measurement tape can be for some donkeys a challenge. I always take my donkeys out with the halter/lead line on and let the donkey smell the cloth tape or anything new. If they are afraid of it wont touch it with their mouth I put it on my head and wrap it around my body. Soon I am able to touch my donkey with the tape. 🙂
I am a dealer for Kensington Protective Products I can sell any blanket any size or any product they have at a cheaper price than the MSRP. Why I like Kensington? They sell quality products and offer a lifetime warranty and will send another blanket if the blanket does not fit.
The miniature horse blankets are what I am selling for mini donkeys. Order miniature donkey blanket using the velcro on the chest and under the belly works so much better than the metal clasps as it fits better.
If you need help trying to find a blanket just ask I will do my best to find the best fitting blanket available from Kensington for miniature, standard/burro, mammoth donkeys, mules and of course horses.
How to Wash and Care for your Donkey, pony, horse or mule Blanket:
Remember that no blanket is 100% waterproof for the entire winter. Once you start putting the blanket on your equine you must check for rubs and dampness daily. I keep two blankets ready to go for all of our eight equine, six donkeys and two horses. Why? As I stated above the blanket can get wet and I need to add a dry blanket until the weather breaks and we move back into rain. I remove the blanket as soon as we are out of the 20’s and move back to rain weather. I never blanket my equine during the rain as they all have shelters to move into and no blanket is 100% waterproof though the rainy season.
How often do I wash my blankets?
DO NOT OVER WASH YOUR BLANKETS. Scrape the poop of the blanket, before washing. I wash all of our blankets once a year in the summer, this way I can hang them out to dry. DO NOT PUT A WATER PROOF BLANKET IN THE DRYER. After they are dry I spray a water repellant on each blanket. Now I am ready for winter.

I am working with Kensington to make these blankets for the standard and burro size donkey in the winter of 2022 and 2023. “I never blanket a donkey in the rain. Why? I provide shelter for my donkeys and horses to go in and out as they choose. The hay, salt, and clean warm water are in the shelter. No blanket is 100% waterproof without changing in severe wet weather day after day. This is why I always have two blankets for all of our donkeys and horses ready to change out a dry blanket as needed.”
How do I measure my donkey for a blanket?
Pull the cloth tape measure snug at the center of the chest to the center of the tale. If the size is not on the chart choose the next size up.
How do I choose the weight of a blanket?
Medium weight is for weather in the ’20s to 0. Living in the Pacific Northwest the medium-weight blanket is always a perfect fit for my donkeys and horses. As soon as the weather breaks above freezing I take the blankets off in the morning while the sun is out giving my donkeys and horses time to pop their fur out before nighttime. Please never leave a blanket on any equine without checking daily. We must change a wet blanket with a dry blanket. Leaving a blanket on while wet can and does cases laminitis and in some cases severe illness. Leaving a blanket on when it is too warm outside can cause serious health issues too. So please use common sense when blanketing.
Heavyweight is 0 and below consistently.
Do all donkeys need blankets in the cold weather?
No. A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we are prepared and ready to use it. Trying to train a donkey to wear a blanket, measure, and order in an emergency is not recommended. It can be very difficult to get orders delivered to the farm in the winter not to mention making sure they are in stock.
Donkeys are stoic meaning they hide the pain from us, humans. Donkeys get arthritis just like people. Donkeys get sick just like people one day everything is fine on the farm and the next day our donkey needs us to help him/her right now. Donkeys’ immune system is unique from donkey to donkey we must be prepared. Donkeys have thick fur and cannot handle staying wet and having icicles hanging off of them without a bit of help. Sadly way too many donkeys die in the severe winter months due to the owner not being prepared and not being able to catch the donkey even to put it in a shelter. It’s really sad for the donkeys. When the weather is hitting the teens and below 0 most donkeys need a bit of help to survive the freezing life-threatening temperatures. All donkeys need a dry shelter during the life-threatening cold weather especially at night with no sunshine. Ice is a huge problem as donkeys, mules, and horses can slip and fall on it so take care of the ice. Donkeys need a blanket when they are shivering, shaking, or have diarrhea without a diet change in the freezing weather. I do not blanket my donkeys when it is raining. I provide shelter, warm clean water, a slow-feeder hay pillow for my donkeys.
Donkeys are stoic meaning they will not show us they are in pain until it is too late in most cases. Colic is preventable for donkeys. I do not use straw for bedding or feed. Why? Straw has no nutritional value and can run high in sugar it must be tested. Not all donkeys can eat straw they must have the vet check the teeth and gums before attempting straw. I use the pine pellet bedding and I add water to the bedding as donkeys are wood eaters they will eat the pellets and they can expand in their tummy.
Please contact me directly at my e-mail Melody@donkeywhisperer.com to get your order started for your donkey, mule, or horse. All orders are shipped directly from Kensington to your farm via FedEx. Kensington provides a lifetime warranty for its products.
God bless you and your family two and four-legged!
Winter has returned to the farm. We are having a wicked freezing snowy, deep snow storm in the Pacific Northwest. All the donkeys and horses have the choice to go in or out of the stall. All eight equine are standing in their stalls out of the wicked wind chill. Its snowing tiny flakes, the beginning of the storm hit around 8:00 am this morning. Looks like this winter storm will run at least five days or more.
A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we are prepared. We only use the blanket when it is needed. A donkey has arthritis, a donkey is sick, a donkey has vet rest. Planning ahead makes the emergency or trauma a bit easier.
Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys do not do well in the cold weather we must do our best to help them stay warm and healthy. Our weather is in the teens with the wind chill and this is dangerous for a donkey.
Take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 Video On Demand Training Series. Melody Johnson is a donkey behavior expert and a trainer of humans. Training the owner or caretaker to train the donkey using resistance free methods. Never abuse, or old cowboy techniques. Donkeys are smart not stubborn. Donkeys have photographic memories. If you are going to work with a donkey you must have a plan. Donkeys are game players.
Did you know donkeys die every winter from the cold? Yes.Donkeys are stoic and do not show pain until it is too late. Preparation is the key. Learning how to be a fair leader. Learning how to train the donkey to trust us to introduce new objects, places, things and people.
Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys must live on a dry paddock just like the desert with limited time out on the grass. Donkeys cannot eat hay too high in sugar or protein without getting sick. Donkeys cannot stand and eat brush all day and night without getting sick. Donkeys are seriously easy keepers. If we do not pay attention to the diet the donkey will get fat, obese and develop insulin resistance, fat deposits on their neck and tummy. Once the fat roll breaks on the neck we can never fix this. All of this is preventable. Please read, research and learn how to care for the magnificent and brilliant desert equine the donkey.
Shelter is important for Donkeys
Clean water is a must. Some donkeys do not like a bucket color. Yes donkeys can see in color. Donkeys prefer clean warm water in the winter. Clean is very important. Make sure to keep a little extra hay in the slow feeder. Salt is imperative to drinking water. We chose free lose salt. No selenium in the salt if the hay has selenium. Never feed alfalfa hay to a donkey. No oats, sweet feed, breads, etc., A safe treat is 1 or 2 bites of a one carrot. Thats it. I never give a bite of a carrot for standing and looking cute. I am not a treat dispenser. I give a bite of a carrot for doing something I asked the donkey to do i.e., come to me on 10 acres when I call.
