Home Storage Solutions

Proudly Serving The Greater Puget Sound Area, from Blaine at the Canadian Border to Olympia and all of the Olympic Peninsula.

My name is John Plake and I live in Port Orchard, Washington. I would like to introduce you to my business, Home Storage Solutions. I started the business over 11 years ago to serve the Olympic Peninsula, providing solutions to easy and difficult storage and closet problems.

My background is in home building as well as furniture building and now I am able to blend the two together to provide storage spaces (typically closets, pantries, linen and garages) which are not only functional and practical, but are also very aesthetically appealing. I will come to your home and take measurements and then develop a plan that will work for your space as well as your budget.

You may wonder if “custom” means your closet costs more. The opposite is actually true. Instead of having a warehouse full of parts trying to fit to your job; the company I use (www.stor-x.com) is a unique manufacturer and they start every job from scratch which means you get the storage solution you want, without having to pay for the “warehouse” so to speak. When the product has been created exactly to your specifications, it is packaged very carefully and shipped for installation.

I am able to offer a variety of wood grains and colors at a much reduced price. I also offer a line of baskets and tie & belt racks to complement your new closet. The possibilities are truly endless and fun!

Race Deck® is also a product I offer for the garage as well as mudroom floors. If you have ever thought of wanting a painted or coated floor, think again. Since most garage slabs are not prepared for a paint product, they will usually chip and flake in a short period of time. Race Deck®, which is made in the USA, is a durable option for a non-slip floor that you can even take with you if you move! Many colors are available and patterns are unlimited.

I am only a phone call away, and there is no charge for me to come and discuss your storage options, create a plan for you, and give you an estimate. So whether you are just starting or finishing your dream home or taking on a fresh remodel, Home Storage Solutions is here to serve you with your storage and closet needs.

We highly recommend John Plake to you as your organizational specialist. Everything has a place in our new home, this makes our life less stressful. Getting organized seriously reduces stress. I am excited to share my experience with John Plake as he is a small business owner who does what he says. Truly a breath of fresh air to hire Home Storage solutions.

We looked at many on-line DYI projects and well it was not only expensive it was time-consuming and overwhelming. John Plake comes into your home and helps you make the difficult decisions easy. Next he orders the quality material and sets up the install date. He even wipes the dust off your new cabinets. Wow!

John Plake is a man of his word. A small business owner who will go above and beyond to make your life easier.

Thank you John!

Select Building A Home

2017 is our year! This has been a long process of praying, planning and waiting for the exact right time.

Things To Consider Before You Start To Build

Marrigage – Did you plan your dreams with your partner? If not things could get rocky. Marriage is a give and take each must learn to let go. Read How to stay married while building.

Land – Will you purchase the land or use your builders land? If you use the builders land the builder may or may not want you to use their builder and cookie cutter plans. These plans will not be your custom plans.  Do your homework, easements, wetlands, etc., are important before purchasing land with nothing on it.

Working with an architect is not always easy. Just like everything in life you must do some work if your goal is excellence. Interview and research to find the right architect who is willing listen to you, build your home not their creative project.  This is your money. Try to find an architect that actually has experienced building a home from beginning to end. Some never get out of the office.

Learning to read the house drawings. Ask you architect before you start paying and working with him/her to teach you how to read the drawings. This seems to get lost in the middle of the storm of creating the house.

Read your contract

The builder must follow the contract i.e., you asked for a certain size (material) of window, door this must be installed. No cheap stuff can be exchanged without your signature on the contract.

Change orders is a NO, NO. Do not do re-work, make sure all of your house is in 3D to walk around inside your home before signing off on the house. This will save you tears and money. When you have a great builder everything is wonderful. Let the experts take care of your home the first time correctly. The cost to do re-work is too expensive both financially and emotionally.

Live on your land for at least one to two years. Why? Neighbors, noise, weather helps determine where you want to place your home. We lived on our land for two years before construction started, this has been an invaluable experience in determining where to place the home on our farm.

Select Live on your land while your home is being built.

Do your homework before purchasing your land, easements, wetlands, etc., are important before purchasing land with nothing on it.

The most important person to hire is your builder. Meet people who have used the builder, ask to walk in and see their work.  A good builder will have references. Interview at least three builders in your area.

Finally it’s time to build. Make sure your builders contract reflects you do not want garbage left on your property, loud music blasting, cigarets, food thrown about. Write this on the contract. Install video surveillance! Be sure to keep outstanding records and an outstanding budget. Did you know you will pay tax for building your home? Yes!

Did you know building a home is stressful? Yes! Dreams and reality sometimes do not match depending on your pocket-book. The computer is your friend for design ideas and it’s free. Use this tool save yourself money with a fancy designer. Be sure to send photos to your builder.
