Donkeys Have Personalities

Did you know animals have personalities?

Donkeys are born with their unique personality, extroverts are more go than whoa. Introvert more whoa than go. Did you know introvert donkeys do not bray? Yes, it’s true the true deep introvert donkey will make a little bit of noise but will never let out a full bray.

Training the introvert takes a bunch of patience and a plan. Why? Everything the introvert does new takes longer to process the information and learn to trust. The donkeys’ gift is the ability to problem-solve and think. Donkeys do not want to do anything that may or may not hurt them or worse kill them. The horse’s gift is speed. Horses when scared fart, poop, and run.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

10 Things About Donkeys You Most Likely Did Not Know

Donkeys are livestock guardians

This is wrong! Some donkeys make great livestock guardians. Donkeys will guard the animals they are bonded to if they are big enough. A miniature donkey is too small to guard anything. Domesticated dogs can kill a miniature donkey. Donkeys bond to their own species. If a donkey is simply placed with a flock of sheep that it does not know, the donkey may grab the neck of the sheep and kill it. Donkeys will kill baby sheep and goats so best to keep the babies away from donkeys. Donkeys grab the neck of another donkey in play and in battle. Please get livestock guarding dogs to guard and protect the livestock. Remember livestock guarding dogs need to be trained to protect livestock. Donkeys need a serious diet as donkeys evolved from the desert. Hay and all forage must be tested to come in at 10% or lower in sugar and protein. Sadly farmers re-sell or give away a donkey who has not performed the job as livestock guarding to their satisfaction.

Donkeys are good for calming a herd of horses or calves.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys need a serious diet and cannot eat all day and night on pasture or brush. Most livestock is fed an extremely rich diet full of grains and lush pasture. Donkeys who are fed rich food or overfed grass or brush will get insulin resistance, fat deposits on the body, and the neck will break over or be crusty. Hoof abscesses are common with a rich diet, the liver fails and soon the donkey dies a painfully slow death. Donkeys are stoic and will never show pain until it is too late.

Donkeys Are Intelligent, Not Stubborn

Donkeys are not flight animals like horses, so you cannot as easily scare or force a donkey to do a task. An old school round penning will never work on a donkey. Donkeys need to see a reason for everything they do. Donkeys evolved from the desert, a donkey needs time to think. I call this ON DONKEY TIME ®. The donkey will never do anything that can hurt the donkey. Self-preservation is number 1 to a donkey. The horse will jump off the grand canyon when scared, do you see the difference? A donkeys’ gift is not sped it is a brain that can problem-solve to stay alive.

Donkeys are incredibly strong.

Donkeys have a reputation for being strong pack animals and while this is true, they are not stronger than another animal of the same size. Donkeys can only hold up to 20% of their weight. Donkeys must be full-grown and conditioned to do heavy work.

When Is A Donkey Full-Grown?

Miniature Donkeys age three

Standard or Burro age four

Mammoth Donkeys six to seven

People Who Talk To Animals

Donkey 101 & 102 E-Training Video On Demand trains the owner or caretaker how to train the donkey using words, (NOT CLICKER) facial expressions, energy, phases and endorphins. Endorphins can be a rub on the withers or a bite of a carrot.

A study conducted at Harvard University by Gary D. Sherman and Jonathan Haidt says that people who like pets more than people and those who have a conversation with their pets on a regular basis are more intelligent and not a crack- head! Talk To The Animals Study

How Can I Help My Obese Donkey Get Healthy?

Question & Answer

Melody, My donkey is obese how can I help my donkey lose weight.

Donkeys who are obese can have whats called insulin resistance making it harder to lose weight. People have insulin resistance too. Here on the Donkey Whisperer Farm ® we have one obese Donkey a rescue donkey named Tuba. Tuba is estimated to be in his late teens or early 20’s.

Tuba is obese but he is healthy. Taking the weight off him is a slow process. Tuba has perfect hooves. Tuba’s blood work is perfect. This is amazing as Usually when a donkey is obese the hooves rot off, white line separation and more. Controlling his diet is key.

My donkey has a thick fat neck that has broken over.  Can I fix this? Once the neck fat breaks over the donkey is stuck with this for life. Here is the good news. If your donkey has a fat neck that has broken you can still help him/her have a healthy diet and life. The donkey can recover in most cases and have a long beautiful healthy life. The donkey who is obese will gain weight much faster than the donkey who is not obese. Kinda like people.

Never starve a donkey. Losing weight and changing the body and blood chemistry takes hard work and time. You can do this! Your donkey is depending on you to learn everything you can to help him/her stay healthy.

How Can I Get My Obese Donkey Healthy?

Schedule a vet to come and take blood for insulin resistance and cushings.

1. A dry paddock or pasture is a must. Donkeys evolved from the desert they cannot eat all day and night without getting obese and eventually sick or death. Please understand donkeys die from obesity. It is a sad death.

2. Create a track connected to the dry lot. The track is for exercise and not for meals. Feed tested low sugar/protein hay under 10% for meals.

3. Make sure your donkey is not getting fed by the neighbors etc., as this happened to us when we moved to our new farm.

4. Test your hay to ensure you have hay that has no weeds, alfalfa and is 10% or lower in sugar and protein. If you cant find low sugar/protein hay soak your hay to remove sugar. Soaking hay to remove sugars that can exacerbate metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance takes more time. If you’re using warm water, you’ll need to submerge the hay (again, a hay net makes this easy) for 30 minutes; if your water is cool or cold, soak the hay for 60 minutes.

5. Weigh your hay.

6. Slow feeder helps the donkey eat slower and make sure you are giving at least two meals a day. If you want to give more you must be weighing your hay.

7. Do not feed people foods, breads, cookies, etc., fruit foods. Sugar is sugar.

8. Do not let your donkey eat brush, trees etc., all day and night. This can cause weight gain too. A dry paddock is a must. Toys and another donkey to play with are vital to your donkeys health.

9. Train your donkey to walk with you and take your donkeys for lots of walks and exercise.

10. Exercise is important for donkeys the same as humans. Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 will teach you how to get the foundation training in place to learn how to cart pull. Donkeys who pull a cart get great exercise. If you do not want to cart pull take your donkeys for hikes with you. Your donkeys can carry your lunch and water.

Donkey Health Tip – MUD

Here Comes The Rain

If your donkey is laying in mud be sure to get the mud off when it drys. Why? Mud has the potential to give sores to equine. The best way to remove the dirt and mud is a brush in the winter. Be gentle around the eyes and ears. We place sawdust down in the high traffic areas and a place to sleep outside.

How nice would it be if I was able to come to your farm and train you how to train your donkey? Please take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102. I train the owner or caretaker how to not only train the donkey for basic social skills. Learn how to stop the bolt, kick and bite. Prepare for the farrier and more.

Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand – Use your smart phone or any smart device on the farm.

1. What is a sign of stress in my donkey?
2. What is a sign of a relaxed donkey?
3. What is the Donkey Hand Shake?
4. What is the 3 second rule?
5. What does walk-on mean? What is the ground tie whoa? (gas and breaks)
6. How can I help a donkey who wants nothing to do with me ever?
7. I have a kicking donkey, how can I help this donkey and stay safe.
8. How can I use the honor donkey to help my donkey learn?
9. Why is my donkey refusing to pick up the feet?
10. Why is play important in training and caring for equine?

Your donkey is waiting for you to learn donkey behavior and how to lead the donkey as a fair leader with a plan. Each time we step into the donkeys world we should be a fair leader. Scanning and aware of how to respond and never drilling or stressing our donkeys out. Stay ON DONKEY TIME ® .

Preparing The Donkey For The Farrier

One of the most wonderful days for donkeys owners is the day we bring our donkey(s) home. Donkeys are healthier emotionally, physically and mentally when they have another donkey to grab the neck and play tag. Eat and groom on the withers. One of the first things we must do is get the farrier on a regular schedule to trim the hooves.

In most cases the donkey has not had any form of training for hoof care or the training was used with pain. Donkeys who are trained with pain will remember the pain, making the farrier day difficult. Can this be fixed? Yes. I train the owner or caretaker how to learn donkey behavior, personality and learn stress and relaxation signs. Each of my students can learn how to do an exercise with their donkey and then take me to the farm with them using any smart phone or device. Each video comes with a written book a PDF to learn. I am training the owner or caretaker to train the donkey.

How Often Do We Trim The Hoof?

Six weeks in the spring and summer as the hoof grows faster during the warm seasons

Seven in the fall and winter

Preparation is the key to farrier day

Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand with our stick and string trains the owner or caretaker how to train the donkey. Learn how to prepare for the farrier before he/she arrives. Select Our Store to order.

The farriers job is to balance the hoof and trim the hoof. Never to train your donkey. If you expect your farrier to train your donkey this will be a sad day. The donkey must be prepared and trust the human before the farrier work begins.  Preparation and quality exercises in Donkey 101 & 102 will prepare your donkey for the farrier. Please do not expect the farrier to train your donkey. Set your donkey up for success. His life depends on you and your training as re-homing a donkey that cannot get the hooves done and will not come to humans is most difficult.

You See Animal Abuse We See Human Abuse

Our world has changed dramatically in how we care and treat animals. We now have business catering to all aspects of pet care, food and behavior training for humans.  First we must train the human, next the human trains the animal.

Humans who abuse animals are not merely signs of a minor personality flaw, but are rather symptomatic of a deep mental disturbance. Cruelty to animals has been recognized as an indicator of a dangerous psychopathy that claims both animal and human victims.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys have been on earth for at least 5000 years. Much longer than the horse.

If you want to learn how to train a donkey you must first stop and think about the donkeys evolution and environment. The desert! Donkeys ears are used to hear the predator and to wave the heat away. Donkeys can survive much hotter weather than they can severe cold. Donkeys cannot survive extreme cold with wind chill temperatures in the teens and below 0 without human intervention.

Many donkey owners think the donkey can eat like a horse and be trained like a horse. Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To be Trained, Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm. Horses can out-run the predator. The donkey must be able to think, feel, evaluate and set into motion a plan of action to survive. Yes! Donkeys can problem solve and think around any predator, human, place or thing.

Donkeys first and most frustrating survival gift is the ability to determine a predator or threat quickly. Next the donkey develops a plan of action to out think the predator or human. Donkeys train humans quickly! In a matter of seconds a donkey will determine if a human, object, place, animal or thing is safe. The donkey is seriously into self-preservation and he/she will use his/her brain to survive each and every time he/she feels threatened. If you are going to train a donkey you must learn to think like a donkey. SELF-PRESERVATION IS NUMBER 1 TO THE DONKEY.

Donkeys second survival gift is the ability to eat very little sugar and protein. In the desert there is not much to eat, the ability to survive once again depends on the donkeys metabolism. The desert does not have green grass, lush trees, leaves. The desert has rocks and is hot arid, dusty dry terrain. The hooves were shaped and created for the desert. Donkeys do not do well standing in wet conditions, the hooves like to stay dry.

Donkeys are seriously deep thinkers. Donkeys are not horses with long ears. Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys were created to survive on very little protein, sugar and hard dry ground. The desert does not have shelter to run and hide from the predator, trees etc., Donkeys learned how to think and problem solve to survive.

Donkeys meet a human and determine the human is

  1. A Treat Dispenser – I can teach this human to do what I want to do
  2. A bully or abuser – I will never partner up with this human, never trust this human. NEVER.
  3. A fair leader. I will follow this human and I will bond to this human for life. Donkeys have photographic memories.

The donkey is not as fast as the horse to out-run the predator, this makes the donkey interesting to train. Donkeys will never do anything they think is not safe ever. We humans may know something is safe but our donkey will need to trust us first. Second the donkey must determine everything we introduce is safe, halter, trailer, person, place and  experience is safe. This is what I call “ON DONKEY TIME”, as donkeys can get a bit pokey and even stop or lay down.

Donkeys hooves are shaped different from the horse to live in the rocks and desert. Donkeys live all over the world. Donkeys hooves to not do well in wet conditions. The hoof gets soft and is prone to infection and abscesses.

Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 E-TRAINING Series trains the owner or caretaker to train the donkey. This is an essential tool for the human as most humans get in a hurry. The donkey will slow way down when they feel the emotions of the human getting stressed. Learning the behavior of the donkey and our donkey halter/lead line with stick and string to touch the donkey will speed up your training time.

Thank you for taking the time to learn the unique behavior of the most humble and exotic desert equine the donkey!

It is a mandatory tool for training your donkey to pick up his/her front and back feet and for addressing behavioral issues such as, pushing, crowding, bullying and refusing to come and lead. The DWF Training Tool Stick and String is mandatory in Donkey 102 and is the key to being a Fair Leader and building a foundation of trust and respect with your donkey.

Each Donkey 102 E-training Video Series includes our Donkey Whisperer Farm Training Tool Stick and String. If you have a Miniature Donkey please purchase the course with the 3ft DWF Training Tool Stick and String. Each donkey 102 E-Training Video Series also includes an 11 page PDF with step by step bullet points for you to refer to as you view the training videos.

Both Donkey 101 and Donkey 102 E-Training Video Series teaches YOU to train your donkey. A third party trainer cannot help your donkey. Only you can train your donkey because you are the one who is caring for your donkey, sharing life with your donkey and building a strong foundation of trust and respect with your donkey. A third party trainer may gain the respect of your donkey, but he/she comes and goes. As the owner and caretaker, you don’t come and go. You are your donkey’s polestar, so it is you that must gain your donkey’s respect, it is you that must become your donkey’s Fair Leader.

We hope you will take the next step in building a partnership with your donkey. Our vision at the Donkey Whisperer Farm is to teach you, the owner/caretaker, to train your donkey and to provide the tools and education to better the life of your donkey. A large percentage of donkeys that end up at shelters, auctions and slaughter houses have been abandoned because they were difficult to handle or could not be trained.
Our vision is that EVERY donkey find its forever home. Our prayer is that your donkey stays with you forever.

Once purchased, each participant will receive a Welcome E-mail within 24 hours of your purchase. Your DWF Training Tool Stick and String will arrive separately in the mail. The e-mail will include a link to the Donkey 102 PDF and a link to the password protected Donkey 102 E-Training Video Series.
