Donkey Is Bonded To Cows

Donkeys usually prefer to live with their own species. Donkeys have photogenic memories, they remember good and bad memories forever. If a donkey is forced to live with just a cow or a bunch of cows in a field without another donkey and later in life, the donkey is re-homed into a herd of donkeys and cows more than likely the donkey will want to hang out more with the cow. Why? For so many years the donkey lived with the cows without a donkey companion, no doubt guarding the cows against coyotes or predators as this was his/her job. Most of these guarding donkeys have never had any hoof trims, teeth checked, fecal samples, and shots, etc., These donkeys have no idea what a halter/lead line is or what a human can do for the donkey. The donkey prefers to shadow what is familiar and safe in his her mind.

Rehabilitation for this donkey will take having a plan and being patient. I suggest Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand, my stick, and string and my halter/lead line. Take one of your honor donkeys into training with this donkey. Why? The honor donkey will have calm energy and this donkey will learn visually as all donkeys are visual learners. Let this donkey see you taking the honor donkey for walks, brushing, and lots of massages. Donkeys learn by watching. It is important to move into the next step of placing your hands on the donkey and training the donkey in short sessions outlined in Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand.

Can this donkey become a trained donkey to take a walk on the halter and lead line and get his feet trimmed? Yes! The owner will need to learn donkey behavior and how to train the donkey and become a much-needed asset to the donkey. This donkey has never had human care much about him other than throwing hay out and give water and salt.

Thank you for investing in your donkey,

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

10 Things About Donkeys You Most Likely Did Not Know

Donkeys are livestock guardians

This is wrong! Very few donkeys make great livestock guardians. Please get a livestock guarding dog to protect your livestock. Donkeys will guard the animals they are bonded to if they are big enough. A miniature donkey is too small to guard anything. Domesticated dogs can kill a miniature donkey. Donkeys bond for life to their own species. If a donkey is placed in with a flock of sheep that it does not know, the donkey may grab the neck of the sheep and kill it. This is not a bad donkey it is simply donkey behavior. Donkeys do best when they get to live with another donkey. Donkeys will kill newborn baby cows, sheep and goats, pigs etc., so best to keep the babies away from donkeys. Donkeys grab the neck of another donkey in play and in battle, play tug with a ball, sleep, drink and eat together basically book ends. Dogs, most donkeys do not like dogs they resemble the wolf and coyote. We have hot wire fences to keep our donkeys in and the dogs out. Sadly farmers end up burying the donkey, re-sell give away a donkey who has not performed the job as livestock guarding to their satisfaction.

Donkey Diet & Care

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys need a serious diet and cannot eat all day and night on pasture or brush. Most livestock is fed an extremely rich diet full of grains and lush pasture. Donkeys who are fed rich food or overfed grass or brush will get insulin resistance, white line disease, fat deposits on the body, neck gets fat and can break over, hoof abscesses, laminitis. Hoof abscesses are common with a rich diet, the liver fails and soon the donkey dies a painfully slow death. Donkeys are stoic and will never show pain until it is too late.

Hay and all forage must be tested to come in at 10% or lower in sugar and protein along with portion control as donkeys gain weight quickly. Donkeys need shelter, clean water, warm in freezing climates and salt. Donkeys do not do well standing in the rain with no shelter due to their thick fur. Some donkeys need a blanket as they cant take the freezing temperatures and this blanket needs to be changed and checked. Donkeys need their hooves trimmed, vet care teeth, shots, fecal sample before worming spring and summer.

Donkeys need great fences and locks as donkeys can visually watch you do something and repeat the task.

Donkeys Are Intelligent, Not Stubborn

Donkeys are not flight animals like horses, most donkeys do not react to physical force to do a task. Donkeys push into pressure. Donkeys can freeze when scared or fight back. Please take the time to learn donkey behavior and personality. Extroverts bray and have more go than whoa, introverts do not bray and have more whoa than go. I teach about this in Donkey 102 video on demand. Donkeys need to see a reason for everything they do. Since donkeys evolved from the desert they learned how to survive with their mind as they do not have the speed of a horse to outrun the predator. Donkeys are deep thinkers game players. I call this ON DONKEY TIME ®. The donkey will never do anything that can hurt the donkey. Self-preservation is number one to a donkey. Donkeys ears back can mean anger, thinking, happy to see you. Learn to read the eyes of your donkey not the ears. The horse will jump off the grand canyon when scared, the donkey will not, do you see the difference? A donkeys’ gift is not sped it is a brain that can problem-solve to stay alive.

Donkeys are incredibly strong.

Donkeys have a reputation for being strong pack animals and while this is true, they are not stronger than another animal of the same size. Donkeys can only hold up to 20% of their weight. Donkeys must be full-grown and conditioned to do heavy work.

When Is A Donkey Full-Grown?

Miniature Donkeys age three

Standard or Burro age four

Mammoth Donkeys six to seven

Donkey Whisperer Farm ® Blog

Welcome donkey lovers, my name is Melody Johnson, I love donkeys. I began my business in 2013 after getting frustrated with the lack of tack and training available for donkeys. I am the voice for the donkey. I train the owner or caretaker worldwide how to tame and train the donkey using resistance-free exercises, never pain. I do not teach clicker training (R). I teach you how to use words, voice, facial expressions, timing and quality exercises that are powerful for you and your donkey to build a fantastic relationship. Donkeys are smart, not stubborn. Donkeys have a photographic memory. Donkeys bond for life to the animal or human they trust. Donkeys are gifts from God.  All of my training series (video on demand) is sold with lifetime access and can be accessed using any smart device, take me to the farm with you.

How can I clean my tack? Wash in a bucket of warm soapy water and dry. Donkey Whisperer Farm ® soft yacht rope is mildew, frail, dirt, rot, and UV resistant. This means that your tack will stay in its original form longer, without breaking, fading saving you money.

Donkey Health Tip – MUD

Here Comes The Rain

If your donkey is laying in mud be sure to get the mud off when it drys. Why? Mud has the potential to give sores to equine. The best way to remove the dirt and mud is a brush in the winter. Be gentle around the eyes and ears. We place sawdust down in the high traffic areas and a place to sleep outside.

How nice would it be if I was able to come to your farm and train you how to train your donkey? Please take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102. I train the owner or caretaker how to not only train the donkey for basic social skills. Learn how to stop the bolt, kick and bite. Prepare for the farrier and more.

Thinking About Health Concerns of Donkeys and Mules

Health Concerns of Donkeys and Mules

Working with donkeys and mules takes training to an entire new level. Donkeys have photographic memories. Mules are half horse and half donkey meaning some mules will be more like a donkey and some more like a horse.  Not every mule is going to make it to the Grand Canyon. What’s the big deal? Horses are flight equine. Donkeys are seriously smart and into self-preservation. All equine have personalities just like people extroverted more go than whoa. Introverted more of a deep thinker and more whoa than go.
Dictionary:

Donkey – Equus Asinus or Ass

Three sizes

Minature

Standard or burro

Mammoth Donkey

JackThe term used for the male of the ass species.

JennetPronounced JEN-et, it is the correct term for the female of the species. The most commonly used term is jenny.

BurroA word taken directly from Spain. It means the common, everyday working donkey found in Spain and Morocco. Many people call a wild donkey a burro in the Pacific Northwest.

Donkey sizesDonkeys come in all shapes and sizes ranging from the Miniature Mediterranean 28 inches to Mammoth 16’2 hands. The ears of a donkey are much longer than the horse.

Mule – The mother is a horse and the dad is a donkey. Mules are Usually sterile.

Hinny – The mother is a donkey and the dad is a horse. The death rate is high when trying to breed this way.

Female mule – Also known as a Molly.

Health Concerns

Diet is number one in the U.S.A. Donkeys evolved from the desert meaning they are seriously easy keepers. The overweight donkey is prone to laminits, colic, founder, hoof problems, abscesses, fat deposits. I.E., Neck crests and breaks. Death is final all due to poor diet. Donkeys must live on a dry pasture for the majority of their day. Donkeys will eat themselves to death if given the chance. Never feed donkeys alfalfa, oats, grass full-time grazing, bread, grass clippings. A safe reward for your donkey is a bite of a carrot. A bite. Never feed apples, pears etc., to your donkey. Donkeys evolved from the desert think about what is in the desert.  Donkeys are seriously Easy Keepers.

Fecal samples are a must to prevent worms. Donkeys must have vet checks and regular hoof trimming just like the horse when living in domestication.

Reproduction

Donkeys gestation is twelve to thirteen months. Vet care is a must if you think your donkey is pregnant get a vet check do not guess.

Donkeys are stoic – Meaning donkeys will never show pain until it is too late. Be sure to not wait too long to get medical attention as your donkeys life is depending on you.

Training A Donkey With A Fence Pannel

Question & Answer,

Melody, I saw a video from a large Donkey Rescue Organization using a fence panel to tame donkeys. What do you think of this technique? Tina, OK.

Tina, I have seen the video. 🙁 Humans and Animals cannot learn when under the flight response. The donkey in the video is dangerous due to the flight response and being locked in the fence panel. The human is afraid for good reason. This is not the way to teach the donkey to trust the human.

Donkeys have photographic memories. Every time we step into our donkey’s world we are teaching something. Good or bad we are teachers.

Attempting to teach any human or animal when scared is impossible. The brain must be calm in order to learn. For humans and animals.

I prefer to train my students to learn donkey behavior, personality, signs of stress and relaxation, and how to set the donkey(s) up to learn and for success.

Learn how to keep the donkey calm and stop the pressure before the donkey is pushed into the stress zone of fighting or withdrawing depending on the personality.

Donkey Personality Introverted donkeys when pushed will lay down. Extroverts will rear, bite and kick. Both introverted and extroverted donkeys can stop moving their feet when stressed. The eyes are glazed over as they have checked out for a while.

Never betray a donkey, never ever hurt a donkey in any way. Never let a donkey see you the human leader watch while a human or animal hurts the donkey. The donkey will deem the human who did not stop the pain NOT A LEADER. Less is more; equine learn from the release of pressure. 🙂

Fall Is Time To Reflect

The Donkey Whisperer Farm ® has had a year of milestones! Truly blessing after blessing as we prayed, planned and worked really hard on each project. Our little farm business has been building custom fit donkey, mule, pony, and even Zonk halter/lead lines hand made with soft yacht rope worldwide. We now sell riding reins .

The big news! The Donkey Whisperer Farm Donkey Miniature and Burro Mammoth, or mule fiberglass stick and string to touch your donkey not hit your donkey. I designed each stick and string to be a perfect training tool. The tip is leather not rubber. Rubber pulls the hair on the donkey defeating the goal of teaching the donkey to trust the human. Each stick and string is hand made in the U.S.A. When you purchase from the Donkey Whisperer Farm you can expect quality 100% of the time in combination with outstanding customer service. We provide only the best for you and your donkey.

A large percentage of donkeys that end up at shelters, auctions and slaughter houses have been abandoned because they were difficult to handle or could not be trained. Our vision is that EVERY donkey find its forever home. Our prayer is that your donkey stays with you forever.

We are selling these training tools with Donkey 102 worldwide. Donkey 101 E-VIDEO Series and now Donkey 102 E- VIDEO Series is selling worldwide. People who own donkeys can learn how to train the donkey and take me Melody Johnson to the farm via any smart device. This is a GOD accomplishment. I train the owner or caretaker to train the donkey worldwide using resistance free methods. Never abuse.

Select Donkey Whisperer Farm to take a look at what we are doing for the donkeys living in our world and the people who own them and care for them.

2019 we watched our privacy trees grow before our eyes. We are excited to have privacy and very soon. Moving into a farm field with no privacy has been a challenge. The beautiful trees love the sunshine and our irrigation water from the Dungeness river. God is amazing.

Donkey Sitting Down our logo ®

So many farm projects and the animals well they give us the strength and motivation to keep working and pressing forward. Farm life is hard work. Rewarding and emotionally challenging. Winter may seem like a time to rest for most people, working with equine is a full-time job, 12 months a year and twenty-four hours a day. We love the farm life, not for everyone but for us this is a gift as life is fragile and precious. We know we will never get this day back again. The animals need full-time care, hooves need even more attention as the wet weather brings challenges.

The donkeys, horses, dogs and kitty are all doing great. 2019 has been a wonderful year full of milestones. We are now putting up our hay ourselves. Watching the hay leave our farm we grow and work so hard to get baled has been really hard. Donkeys cannot eat alfalfa hay without getting obese and sick.

2019 We Created A New Free Video “Bringing Your Donkey Home”

2020 GOD willing we will have 100% orchard hay testing in below 10% sugar to put in our barn. Low sugar/protein hay has become really expensive in the Pacific Northwest. We are excited to start production of this healthy hay beginning with our donkeys and horses.

Take a virtual tour around the Donkey Whisperer Farm. Enjoy!
