Welcome Beautiful Fall

September in the Pacific Northwest is truly a beautiful time of the year. Hubby Scott has taken care of all of our hay equipment and placed each piece of machinery in its correct place for the fall and winter.

Blankets are ready for another winter, hopefully we will not need to use them.

My garden is winding down and getting ready for a much needed winter rest.

Small Farms Of America Are Dying

Shop In Our Store

Owning a small farm is a dream come true for me and my husband Scott. As children we both have found memories of the family farms. Now that we are in our late fifties something has drastically changed, small farms are being sold for cash something most farmers would never think of doing ever.

Hay Field Plowed

Scott plowing the field fall 2019

What has changed over the last sixty years?

Big farms can sell their produce much cheaper than small farms.  Customers support the big farm over the small farm by shopping in the store over and over and not thinking about the little farm down the road.  Another huge issue; the new workforce does not want to work as hard as a farmer they want a desk job no more than eight hours with a half hour lunch.

In the past people started farms for the lifestyle and the freedom to work hard and earn a fair living. Today if a person wants to start a small farm, they had better have a full-time job or savings to pay for it. Why? Farming is expensive it’s not a business anymore but more of a hobby for most people new to farming. No profit is seen for up to seven or ten years. That’s a long time to not get any profit while working seven days a week, long hours and no vacation ever. Farmers rarely take a vacation as the cost is not prohibitive to leave the farm.

Please support small farms. Purchase from our store  now.

Teaching My Donkey To Pick Up The Feet – Farrier Preparation

One of the most wonderful days for donkeys owners is the day we bring our donkeys home. Watch my free YOUTUBE video Bringing Your Donkey Home Donkeys are healthier emotionally, physically and mentally when they have another donkey to grab the neck and play tag. Eat and groom on the withers. One of the first things we must do is get the farrier on a regular schedule to trim the hooves.

In most cases the donkey has not had any form of training for hoof care or the training was used with pain. Donkeys who are trained with pain will remember the pain, making the farrier day difficult. Can this be fixed? Yes. I train the owner or caretaker how to learn donkey behavior, personality and learn stress and relaxation signs. Each of my students can learn how to do an exercise with their donkey and then take me to the farm with them using any smart phone or device. Each video comes with a written book a PDF to learn. I am training the owner or caretaker to train the donkey.

How Often Do We Trim The Hoof?

Six weeks in the spring and summer as the hoof grows faster during the warm seasons.

Seven in the fall and winter.

Preparation is the key to farrier day.

Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand with our stick and string trains the owner or caretaker how to train the donkey. Learn how to prepare for the farrier before he/she arrives. Select Our Store to order.

The farriers job is to balance the hoof and trim the hoof. Never to train your donkey. If you expect your farrier to train your donkey this will be a sad day. The donkey must be prepared and trust the human before the farrier work begins. Preparation and quality exercises in Donkey 101 & 102 will prepare your donkey for the farrier. Please do not expect the farrier to train your donkey. Set your donkey up for success. His life depends on you and your training as re-homing a donkey that cannot get the hooves done and will not come to humans is most difficult.

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys have been on earth for at least 5000 years. Much longer than the horse.

If you want to learn how to train a donkey you must first stop and think about the donkeys evolution and environment. The desert! Donkeys ears are used to hear the predator and to wave the heat away. Donkeys can survive much hotter weather than they can severe cold. Donkeys cannot survive extreme cold with wind chill temperatures in the teens and below 0 without human intervention.

Many donkey owners think the donkey can eat like a horse and be trained like a horse. Horses Dream Of Being Trained The Way A Donkey Demands To be Trained, Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm. Horses can out-run the predator. The donkey must be able to think, feel, evaluate and set into motion a plan of action to survive. Yes! Donkeys can problem solve and think around any predator, human, place or thing.

Donkeys first and most frustrating survival gift is the ability to determine a predator or threat quickly. Next the donkey develops a plan of action to out think the predator or human. Donkeys train humans quickly! In a matter of seconds a donkey will determine if a human, object, place, animal or thing is safe. The donkey is seriously into self-preservation and he/she will use his/her brain to survive each and every time he/she feels threatened. If you are going to train a donkey you must learn to think like a donkey. SELF-PRESERVATION IS NUMBER 1 TO THE DONKEY.

Donkeys second survival gift is the ability to eat very little sugar and protein. In the desert there is not much to eat, the ability to survive once again depends on the donkeys metabolism. The desert does not have green grass, lush trees, leaves. The desert has rocks and is hot arid, dusty dry terrain. The hooves were shaped and created for the desert. Donkeys do not do well standing in wet conditions, the hooves like to stay dry.

Interested in learning donkey behavior?

Print out her booklet explaining donkeys behavior, signs of stress, relaxation, and personality. Yes donkeys have extroverted and introverted personalities just like people.

Endorphins a bite of a carrot a treat. Giving a bite of a carrot for doing the task correctly is a powerful training tool. One I Melody Johnson work hard to train owner of a donkey. Treats must be healthy and safe and training must be ON DONKEY TIME ™ meaning we are never stressed, or drilling the donkey. Short lessons. End on a good note and come back tomorrow to see what your donkey has learned.

Students questions

  1. I am afraid to give a bite of a carrot as the donkey will become nippy? Donkey 101 teaches you how to be a fair leader. How to learn timing and stop the nip or bite. You are learning how to be a fair leader. A fair leader 100% of the time you are with your donkey. Donkeys will not eat anything if in fear or do not trust us humans. Donkeys cannot be bribed or beat to follow you as a leader. You must earn the respect of your donkey. This takes playing games with your donkey. Take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 Video Training by trainer Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm.
  2. I purchased a six thousand dollar riding donkey. I rode the donkey twice. Now the donkey will not come to me. Your donkey has learned how to train you. Donkeys have the gift of survival. It is time for you to learn donkey behavior and how to be a fair leader.
  3. When my sister comes over to ride my donkey will not follow her. Why? The donkey will follow the human who is fair and a leader. The donkey is smart not stubborn. If your donkey is riding in a pack of donkeys following the tale of a donkey your sister can ride. The donkey will take care of your sister. Did I tell you how smart donkeys are? Donkeys are smart not stubborn.

Donkey Love

When a donkey bonds to another donkey, animal or human it is for life. Donkeys are deep thinkers, donkeys feel deeply, donkeys can feel our pain and will even smell our leg after surgery. Yes, donkeys are truly one of Gods most amazing animals.

Donkeys will push the other donkeys out-of-the-way to be first to get our attention when this human animal bond has formed. Years can pass and the donkey will never forget our voice and smell. Never.  I pray that you will share this post to help other people learn about these amazing majestic desert equines, the donkey.

Select Donkey Whisperer Farm to study in our online Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 E-Training Series. Remember we need tools to do any job correctly the donkey needs a halter that fits. We sell donkey halter/lead lines. Our stick and string is used to touch the donkey never to hit the donkey. Please understand the stick and string is used to desensitize the donkey before sticking our head in the kick zone. Donkeys can kick, forward, backwards and sideways with 3 legs on the ground.

When training, I use only resistance-free techniques. I train the owner to use words, facial expressions, voice and timing. NOT CLICKER TRAINING. Training a donkey can be challenging as donkeys do not learn and respond like a horse. Donkeys are visual learners and are seriously into self-preservation. Donkeys require you to think ahead and have a positive plan and you must move and respond On Donkey Time ™ meaning never drill a donkey. Donkeys gravitate towards firm leadership and clear, calm boundaries. In this way donkeys inspire us to cultivate our finest human qualities.

God bless you and your family two and four-legged

A third party trainer may gain the respect of your donkey, but he/she comes and goes. As the owner and caretaker, you don’t come and go. You are your donkey’s polestar, so it is you that must gain your donkey’s respect, it is you that must become your donkey’s Fair Leader.

We hope you will take the next step in building a partnership with your donkey. Our vision at the Donkey Whisperer Farm is to teach you, the owner/caretaker, to train your donkey and to provide the tools and education to better the life of your donkey. A large percentage of donkeys that end up at shelters, auctions and slaughter houses have been abandoned because they were difficult to handle or could not be trained.
