Hoof Abscess

Rio our Mammoth donkey started limping last Sunday. Donkeys are stoic, by the time they show us they are in pain it is serious. We took Rio into the barn and began our hoof abscess program Select Donkey Hoof Abscess Video On Demand to purchase. Everything I teach in the Abscess Video was taught to me from our veterinarians. The video teaches the owner or caretaker how to get the donkey out of pain quickly. Our PDF booklet can be printed out to take shopping and get all the supplies for your farm.

Please be prepared. Please never let a hoof abscess heal on its own, your donkey, mule or horse needs your support and fast. Sadly, abscesses can cause laminitis in the other hoof from the weight pushed on it. Sadly, donkeys can die from an abscesses that was not treated quickly and properly. Rio is healing and walking really good in his boot. Donkeys must keep moving not working hard, but movement is vital to healing.

If you have soaked and poulticed your equines hoof for three days and nothing comes out (black gunk) on the pad. You must call the Vet!

If we catch a hoof abscess quickly in most cases we can heal the hoof without cutting a hole out. Cutting the hole out should be done by a skilled vet not a farrier or trimmer. Make sure to ask the vet to x-ray so no guessing is done on where to cut the hole out of the hoof. The hoof takes one year to grow out.

Memories Of Summer On The Farm

Seems like forever since I walked in my bare feet to move the sprinkler. Listened to the hissing of the water landing on the hay field, trees and plants and yet its truly only been weeks. Spring and Summer are truly my most favorite times of the year.

Apples and Pears Are Ripe In Sequim, WA

Please never feed a horse, donkey or mule without asking the owner for permission. Allergies, health specific diet are real. You can cause laminitis, cushings, abscesses and obesity. Obesity can cause death in equine living in domestication.

What is Laminitis?

Radiograph of a horse hoof showing rotation of the coffin bone and evidence of sinking, a condition often associated with laminitis. The annotation P2 stands for the middle phalanx, or pastern bone, and P3 denotes the distal phalanx, or coffin bone. The yellow lines mark the distance between the top and bottom part of the coffin bone relative to the hoof wall, showing the distal (bottom) of the coffin bone is rotated away from the hoof wall.

Laminitis is a disease that affects the feet of ungulates, and is found mostly in horses and cattle. Clinical signs include foot tenderness progressing to inability to walk, increased digital pulses, and increased temperature in the hooves. Severe cases with outwardly visible clinical signs are known by the colloquial term founder, and progression of the disease may lead to perforation of the coffin bone through the sole of the hoof or being unable to stand up requiring euthanasia.

Dangerous Seasonal Fruit – Horses, Donkeys and Mules

lilylookinginwoodsbitttlesssogoodFriends of the Donkey Whisperer Farm,

I received this alert from my vet, I am passing it forward to help save the life of a horse, donkey or mule.

Seasonal Fruit Fall

Autumn in Washington State means likely horse, donkeys and mules exposure to fruit fall. Too many apples/pears/berries/rosehips and exposure to nuts like black walnuts can not only cause gastrointestinal distress, but may also lead to more serious emergencies like esophageal obstruction and laminitis.

“It seems like every pasture has fruit trees that can be too much of a good thing.”

Please take some time to look around, cut back the blackberries that have encroached and knock down the apples & make some cider for yourself!

Monitor for loose manure and for any signs of colic such as pawing, excessive laying down, gassiness, reduced appetite, and looking at flanks.  These signs can also be due to sand accumulation in the gut which is also a seasonal risk in our area.

Please call your vet if your equine has any of the symptoms above.
