A baby donkey can become an orphan when its mom stops feeding, dies, or is aggressive towards the newborn donkey. Sadly, way too many humans start imprinting the baby too soon. Mom says, “You take care of the foal.” Best to let mom and baby bond and have at least two weeks without removing the baby and placing our human scent all over the baby. Another reason females can reject a baby is being bred before they are full-grown. Imature female donkeys can become afraid of the foal or even attack it. The donkey mom’s milk is not coming in due to a poor diet and inadequate health care, or another health issue requiring a veterinarian. Please call a veterinarian experienced with donkeys asap.
