Why train the owner to train the donkey?

The donkey must trust the human before we can train the donkey. Donkeys are thinkers, game players they are not flight equine. This does not mean your donkey will not spook. All donkeys can spook. Many factors come to play when owning a donkey as in all equine the more we can show the donkey we are a fair leader and expose them to our human world the better the donkey will be. Donkeys generally do not enjoy loud music, and chaos. Donkeys are the exotic Desert Equine. Donkeys require a serious diet of low sugar and low protein hay to stay healthy. Shelter and clean water is a must. Donkeys need another donkey to live with to be healthy physically, emotionally and mentally. Donkeys have photographic memories. Donkeys are visual learners. Donkeys require a dry paddock for the majority of their day. Donkeys evolved from the desert. Try creating fences and gates to ensure your donkey gets exercise and eats some green grass for limited amounts of time. Studies have proven if we let our easy keeper equine eat 6:00am to 10:00am the sugar content will be lower in our pastures. Never feed alfalfa hay, grass clippings, bread, or pears, apples to your donkey. A bite of an apple once in a while is safe but too much is going to cause colic. I simply do not feed apples to my donkeys. I love my donkeys and do not want to bury my donkeys. Apples can ferment and there is a chance of colic.

• A male donkey is called a jack.

• ‘Burro’ is the Spanish word for donkey. Wild donkeys in the U.S.A. are called  burros.

• A female donkey is called a jenny or jennet.

• A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse (mare).

• A hinny is the offspring of a male horse (stallion) and a female donkey (jenny).

Donkeys need dry pastures and paddocks as their hooves were made to live in the desert.

Training A Donkey Using Endorphins

Humans Can Become Stress Eaters 

Wonder Why? Food releases endorphins and this makes us feel better. In order to live a healthy life we must work hard to  understand why we are reaching for the ice cream. This is a fact.  It should brighten your mood because eating comfort foods stimulate endorphins in your brain. Endorphins are the feel good sensation. Donkeys have endorphins in the bran too!  Endorphins are natural stress fighters.

Donkey 101 teaches the owner or caretaker how to train using timing, voice, energy, a bite of a carrot for doing the job correctly not a try. A try deserves a massage, releasing endorphins. Endorphins create a bond for both the donkey and the human. Endorphins are released for the donkey and the human as studies have proven how animals heal humans.

Food Is Used As a Reward For Doing The Task Correctly. Food is never given for a try. This is a treat dispenser the donkey learns this is all the human is a treat dispenser. Stop throwing treats at your donkeys as obesity can kill a donkey. A bite of a carrot is safe. Make sure you understand how to use endorphins before attempting to train.

Counter Conditioning

Feeding your donkey a bite of carrot while stressed with the vet or any scary object can change the emotional response. Donkeys will not eat when in FEAR. Donkeys have photographic memories and will need time to recover from severe abuse or trauma.

With the huge movement of “natural” horsemanship, rope halters have become quite popular as a training aid. They work on pressure points on the Donkey, Mule and Horse’s face. No need to use a rough rope that causes the nose to bleed. We make soft yacht rope which works but is humane.

Donkeys, horses and mules can push into pressure, crowding the human and or dragging the human around. Equine learn quickly how to read the human and lead the human.

 We are working on Donkey 102 now for the feet and more.The flat halter works like a dog on a harness, we have all seen a large dog dragging the human around on a harness.

The donkey is strong, stronger than most horses his or her size. Donkeys, horses and mules learn quickly they are stronger than their owner or caretaker. The flat halter has no pressure points.

One of the most common things I see with the spoiled, naughty or fearful donkey is dragging the human around. This is frustrating and dangerous.

Most donkeys never see a halter unless it is time for the vet, trimmer or to move to a new farm. We created E-TRAINING DONKEY 101 to change this. When the Donkey Whisperer Farm students go out to the farm the donkey comes running. This is time to have fun, be with their human leader.
