Apples and Pears

Dear Friends,

Apple Season has arrived! As great as they may be for humans this is not great for the domesticated Donkey, Mule or Horse. In fact this may cause DEATH from Colic and/or a huge amount of stress, tears, vet cost or even burying the beloved equine (Donkey, horse or mule).

Never feed grass clippings or bread to your horse, donkey or mule. PLEASE NEVER FEED ANOTHER ANY ANIMAL THAT IS NOT YOUR ANIMAL. Some animals have a form of insulin resistance, most must have a slow change of diet or they can founder, hoof rots out abscess or colic or worse die.

Select grass clipping

Donkeys, Horses and Mules get Sick, belly aches and gas from eating too many apples! Eating too much human food can increase their risk for colic.

This is one of the most important posts I can write. I will do my best to write it in a way to educate and not offend people as the equine (donkey, horse or mule) need us humans to learn. In fact their lives depend on it!

When you drive by a farm please do not make your hot rod scare the equine as they can and do run through a fence in fear. Not to mention the vet bill for falling down and possibly breaking a leg. Please do not throw bread, apples, pears, watermelon, grass clippings, beer bottles or garbage over the fence at the farm animals.

Horses, donkeys and mules will die of colic if not treated quickly! Bread will get wrapped in their intestine and they can die.

Please never stop and feed any equine (animal) anything without the permission of the owner.

Throwing apples or any food over the fence of an equestrian farm can cause death or a huge vet bill for the owners not to mention emotional stress, tears.

We have video surveillance on the Donkey Whisperer Farm and signs stating DO NOT FEED THE HORSES AND DONKEYS and still I have to tell people not to feed my equine. This is a huge problem and one I think most people who do not own equine just do not understand. You think you are sharing love, in fact you could kill the sweet Donkey, Horse or Mule living near you.

Thank you for sharing and caring.

Legend Of The Cross On The Donkey

Have You Ever Heard Of The Dummy Foal?

I am not a breeder, I am a world-wide virtual coach, consultant and trainer of the owners of horses, donkeys and mules. One day our new farm will be completed here in Sequim, WA and I will have on-site classes learning from me and experts in dental, saddle fitting, cart pulling and more. I have heard of the maiden mare syndrome where the mare refuses to feed her foal or will try to kill it. Never have I seen a foal who does not try to bond with his/her mother or try to eat, so powerful and interesting to see how this was fixed. This is why I am so passionate on learning as much as I can from all trainers and heath care providers world-wide. No one person knows everything.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2015!

Oboe Our New Gelding Donkey Acts Like A Jack

Oboe one of our two rescue donkeys has no paperwork, lives with Tuba his long time buddy and Rio our Mammoth donkey full-time. I am constantly studying the behavior of the donkey and horses on our farm, teaching world-wide to my virtual students and studying everything I can get my hands on for the personality of equine and humans. Interesting fact; when my mares (horses) go into estrus (we have no female donkeys) Oboe wants to breed. He runs at them ready to reproduce in a hurry and braying frantically. When they go out of his sight on our farm he calls out to them in a panic as if to say ladies get back here now! Yesterday I brought the mares into the barn after getting out on the big pasture for an hour Oboe was looking through his stall like always at the girls and then he turned and mounted Rio our Mammoth donkey, Rio is 16’2 hands tall thank GOD, left liquid on the floor. This behavior is not normal as we have six geldings (donkeys) none of them do this except Obo.  Rio lived with Miss Lily my Palomino mare and Rocket Man one of our three minis for almost seven years before moving to our new farm in Sequim, WA. Interesting fact; Rocket Man was a Jack for many years before being gelded and he has never acted like a Jack.  “This behavior explains one of the reasons why he has been so very difficult to train, Oboe is no doubt proud cut.”

Jennies mount jennies when they are in estrus (heat) ready to get pregnant and the theory is in the wild they are in small groups and the frustration is not so bad as when they are forced to live in small spaces together in large numbers. Again, theory I am not a breeder. I was told that Donkeys prefer their own species to breed and this is clearly not true as Oboe wants to mate with my two horses, they would never tolerate this ever. I find this to be very interesting as why is this happening to this donkey?  Lot’s of questions unanswered as he has no past I can trace. I called my vet asking what this means and what we can do to help him relax and become a regular gelding. I was told I can collect a sample of the liquid and bring it in for a sample if it happens again. So life on the Donkey Whisperer Farm is becoming more and more interesting by the day.

After the Jack (intact donkey) is gelded does his behavior change?

Depends on how long the donkey was a Jack (intact) and what behavior he was authorized to do. Sadly most people get a donkey and throw them out in a pasture and do not pick out the feet, put the halter on and off each day and most certainly do not teach them behavior and manners. Thus why most farriers want nothing to do with trimming a donkey. If a donkey has been authorized to be violent when mating or with another herd members or the owner for years and years and then you geld him more than likely his bad behavior will not change without an expert trainer. The same for females jennies (donkey) or mares (horses) that have been authorized to have naughty/dangerous behavior i.e., biting, kicking, striking, squirting urine and bolting/charging at the human. When this behavior is authorized the equine learns they have the power to be the leader over the human owner, these behaviors are very difficult to fix and in some cases can’t be fixed.

Natural To Blanket Our Beloved Domesticated Horse, Donkey Or Mule?

A blanket is like a fire extinguisher we hope we do not need to use it. We have it ready and learn how to use it before the emergency hits. Please be prepared. Please train your donkey to accept the blanket before the emergency hits. I never blanket unless an emergency or the donkey is suffering cant move due to arthritis and age. As soon as the weather gets out of extreme cold the blanket is off. Or the vet says the stall rest is over etc., No blanket is water proof. We must use common sense.

Is It Natural To Blanket A Domesticated Equine (horse, donkey or mule) when the wind chill and snow is horrific?

First let me step back in time and share how I came to my inner peace with the natural equine world. When I was a kid with my horse in the 70’s we did not do the teeth, blanket, and we sure as heck did not do our own worming.

A few things to consider:

1. Nothing is natural about any equine living a domesticated life, even when we do our best to remove the shoes when not trail riding or use boots for trail riding. My farm is set up so all of my horses and donkeys can choose to go into their stall to eat and drink and get out of the weather if they choose.  Locking any equine in a stall will make them crazy.  Equine were created to walk fifteen to twenty-five miles a day. Most domesticated equine stand around and wait for their meals. Nothing is natural about living a domesticated life.

I let all of my equine grow a fur coat and I blanket as needed per individual equine, when sick or extreme wicked weather comes.  I check the blankets each and every day for sores, rubbing, dampness or a loose blanket/too tight in a place etc., I  replace with a dry coat as needed until the weather changes or the equine no longer needs it.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, WA we do not have weather that stays in the teens very long. We go back into the 30’s pretty fast, I take the blanket off wen we are out of the serious cold wind chills or a sick equine is well. We do however have high winds and this can cause the weather to be more frigid.

I do not blanket during raining season and let them stand out in the rain. Why?

No blanket is 100% water proof in my experience, must be changed and dried, need to make sure no sores or rubbing, lot’s of work. If you leave on a wet blanket serious illness can occur. Be prepared get two blankets, this way you can dry one while using the other one. As soon as the weather is back to normal or the donkey is healthy take the blanket off.

2. When an equine live in the wild they can run and get warm, find a place to get out of the elements.

The farm we lived on for thirteen years before moving to Sequim, WA had two pole stalls I placed  at the top of the hill (paddock) to stop mud.

Running on ice to get warm can cause serious injuries.  Blanketing keeps our horses calm. farm2014dec

3. Any equine who has arthritis or is sick, surgery, or is way to young to withstand the extreme cold needs a blanket. Blanketing is hard work as you must check it every day and when it is really wet replace with a dry blanket. Sorry, no blanket is 100% waterproof for the entire winter and fall season. Thus why I only blanket when we hit the high 20’s with a wind chill in the Pacific Northwest pushing me below 0 etc., then they are locked in until well if it is raining outside. Their fur coat, warm water, hay is what keeps them warm along with their shelter.

4. When you keep their water clean and warm along with plenty of free choice low sugar hay in your slow feeder you are helping your domesticated equine to stay warm. When you walk into the barn and your equine are shivering or not moving at all frozen stiff you had better blanket. Death can be avoided from ignorance and high vet bills. Heated buckets work great simly keep the cord out of reach for the equine to not bite and get elcrocuted.

5. Not all equine need a blanket in the winter. Please use common sense and check the blanket leaving it on will cause more damage than good if it is left on wet, sores or the leg gets stuck in it.

Here is an outstanding blog I just read that prompted me to write about this. Select Blanketing is Not Bad And You Are Not Natural to read some more brilliant ways to understand why it is imperative you are prepared for a sick equine, older arthritis or the wicked winter that may or may not come.

Please use common sense when blanketing and locking your equine in a stall, after all you chose the equine and they are depending on you to learn everything you can to keep them healthy and happy.
