Bringing Home Mario and Luca

Mario and Luca came to live with us on the Donkey Whisperer Farm ® two and half weeks after Tuba died. Tuba was bonded to Oboe both standard donkeys. Oboe has been in heavy mourning since loosing his buddy Tuba. Please note; if your donkeys companion dies you must get another donkey same sex and size as quickly as possible as donkeys can go into a deep depression and stop eating and drinking causing death from grief. Read Goodbye To Tuba.

Mario (4) and Luca (10) began their life as wild donkeys living in Fort Irwin, CA. Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue (PVDR) humanely captured them, no helicopters, did health checks, shots, worming, gelding, and made sure they were tamed and haltered plus pick up their hooves before sending them to the adoption center. If you are looking to adopt two donkeys I highly recommend PVDR. Donkeys train humans quickly to do exactly what they want to do. If you are thinking about adopting donkeys please get into my program Donkey 101 & 102 video on demand as I teach you how to use words, timing and powerful exercises building a powerful relationship for life with your donkeys. If you do not learn how to become a fair leader for your donkeys they will become the leader of you quickly. Donkeys can act like they know how to absolutely nothing with a human who is inexperienced with donkeys.

We drove to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, Riverside, WA to pick these boys up from Sequim, WA encountered snow and ice it was a road trip to say the least. God is amazing we had favor going over to get them and bringing them home. Thank you Jesus! Did you know donkeys ride lose in the trailer? Yes as donkeys will brace their butt up against the trailer and ride without being tied. These boys spent one week in our miniature donkey barn, paddock and track on the other side of Oboe and our three miniature donkeys. I wanted to be sure we built a connection before moving them into the larger paddock with Oboe and on our large donkey track to run and play. Additionally I began the first exercise in Donkey 101 and they did outstanding. I am happy to report these boys are bonding with me quickly showing no signs of abuse from humans and are now living with Tuba and spending their entire day with Tuba and the miniature donkeys on the large track. Our farrier was scheduled to come to the farm the following week these boys arrived, their hooves needed to be trimmed so we got it done. I can tell you first hand that donkeys need to trust both their owner and the farrier. Mario did the typical donkey freeze for the hoof trims and Luca put up a fight. I ended up having to tie him to do his hooves as they had to be done. I continue to work with both boys in my E-Training Donkey 101 & 102 (pick up the feet) to prepare for the next farrier visit in just five more weeks.

The farm is beginning to feel normal again as we have six donkeys and two horses. We continue to grieve for Rio our Mammoth donkey and Tuba each and every day they are no doubt in heaven together as God brought them home. We know we will see them again. Peace and harmony is slowly coming back to our farm.

Wild Burro and Horses BLM Roundup

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning on announcing the next roundup of wild horses and wild burro’s for fiscal year 2023. These helicopter roundups are brutal and traumatizing resulting in injury or death to the horses and burro’s. Google BLM Donkey Abuse to watch a horrible YOUTUBE video showing the truth, helicopters chasing the donkeys and the donkey suffering physical abuse from wranglers for not running when scared and tired. Donkeys freeze when scared and tired as donkeys are not horses with long ears.

You can be the voice for the wild horses and burros it only takes a couple of minutes of your time to fill out the forms listed below. Your voice matters!

Sadly the abuse does not end in the round up its worse when captured and forced to live in holding pens as they become one of 60,000 plus wild horses and burros locked up in jail, held in the BLM’s holding system. Many of these holding pens are full of disease outbreaks, underfeeding, lack of basic care, vet treatment along with seriously ill maintained facilities causing more injuries.

American Wild Horse Campaign AWHC is taking action to address this crisis and break the silence surrounding the beginning of the BLM’s next roundup season. Please fill out all of the forms below now.

1) DEMAND BLM ACCOUNTABILITY ON Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP) VIOLATIONS
The BLM has its own assessment standards for holding facilities called the Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP). Even with this program in place, many holding facilities have been found in violation of these standards. Send a message to the Department of the Interior to demand the BLM actively enforce its own CAWP standards. →

SEND A MESSAGE

2) SUPPORT THE WILD HORSE AND BURRO PROTECTION ACT
One of our wild horse champions in Congress, Representative Dina Titus (D-NV) introduced legislation this year that would take a stand against the brutality of the BLM’s helicopter roundups: The Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act (H.R. 6635). This bill would ban the use of helicopters for capture once and for all. Send a message to your representatives in Congress letting them know you support this legislation and ask them to sign on as a cosponsor. →

SEND A MESSAGE

3) CALL ON THE BLM TO MANDATE CAMERA INSTALLATIONS
Often wild horses and burros are chased for miles before our field representatives see them. And even when the helicopter comes into view, the BLM places the observers as far as a mile away from the operation, making it nearly impossible to really see what’s happening. We’re fighting for the passage of Rep. Titus’ legislation to ban the use of helicopters, but so long as these roundups continue, we’re advocating for the installation of cameras on all helicopters used for these operations! Mandating helicopter cameras to record and document roundups will help the public hold the BLM accountable and establish a record of activities most Americans never see. Send a message to the BLM to advocate for camera installations on helicopters. →

SEND A MESSAGE

2023 is the year we demand change for the wild horses and burro’s. Tell congress the brutal helicopter roundups should end now. Thank you for taking action.

10 Things About Donkeys You Most Likely Did Not Know

Donkeys are livestock guardians

This is wrong! Very few donkeys make great livestock guardians. Please get a livestock guarding dog to protect your livestock. Donkeys will guard the animals they are bonded to if they are big enough. A miniature donkey is too small to guard anything. Domesticated dogs can kill a miniature donkey. Donkeys bond for life to their own species. If a donkey is placed in with a flock of sheep that it does not know, the donkey may grab the neck of the sheep and kill it. This is not a bad donkey it is simply donkey behavior. Donkeys do best when they get to live with another donkey. Donkeys will kill newborn baby cows, sheep and goats, pigs etc., so best to keep the babies away from donkeys. Donkeys grab the neck of another donkey in play and in battle, play tug with a ball, sleep, drink and eat together basically book ends. Dogs, most donkeys do not like dogs they resemble the wolf and coyote. We have hot wire fences to keep our donkeys in and the dogs out. Sadly farmers end up burying the donkey, re-sell give away a donkey who has not performed the job as livestock guarding to their satisfaction.

Donkey Diet & Care

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys need a serious diet and cannot eat all day and night on pasture or brush. Most livestock is fed an extremely rich diet full of grains and lush pasture. Donkeys who are fed rich food or overfed grass or brush will get insulin resistance, white line disease, fat deposits on the body, neck gets fat and can break over, hoof abscesses, laminitis. Hoof abscesses are common with a rich diet, the liver fails and soon the donkey dies a painfully slow death. Donkeys are stoic and will never show pain until it is too late.

Hay and all forage must be tested to come in at 10% or lower in sugar and protein along with portion control as donkeys gain weight quickly. Donkeys need shelter, clean water, warm in freezing climates and salt. Donkeys do not do well standing in the rain with no shelter due to their thick fur. Some donkeys need a blanket as they cant take the freezing temperatures and this blanket needs to be changed and checked. Donkeys need their hooves trimmed, vet care teeth, shots, fecal sample before worming spring and summer.

Donkeys need great fences and locks as donkeys can visually watch you do something and repeat the task.

Donkeys Are Intelligent, Not Stubborn

Donkeys are not flight animals like horses, most donkeys do not react to physical force to do a task. Donkeys push into pressure. Donkeys can freeze when scared or fight back. Please take the time to learn donkey behavior and personality. Extroverts bray and have more go than whoa, introverts do not bray and have more whoa than go. I teach about this in Donkey 102 video on demand. Donkeys need to see a reason for everything they do. Since donkeys evolved from the desert they learned how to survive with their mind as they do not have the speed of a horse to outrun the predator. Donkeys are deep thinkers game players. I call this ON DONKEY TIME ®. The donkey will never do anything that can hurt the donkey. Self-preservation is number one to a donkey. Donkeys ears back can mean anger, thinking, happy to see you. Learn to read the eyes of your donkey not the ears. The horse will jump off the grand canyon when scared, the donkey will not, do you see the difference? A donkeys’ gift is not sped it is a brain that can problem-solve to stay alive.

Donkeys are incredibly strong.

Donkeys have a reputation for being strong pack animals and while this is true, they are not stronger than another animal of the same size. Donkeys can only hold up to 20% of their weight. Donkeys must be full-grown and conditioned to do heavy work.

When Is A Donkey Full-Grown?

Miniature Donkeys age three

Standard or Burro age four

Mammoth Donkeys six to seven

Death Valley’s Wild Burros~ —

Seems the park would want people to come and visit the park. The donkeys are part of the excitement of the visit. The decision was made to protect plants in lieu of the wild burros. Truly a sad day for the United States Of America.

Death Valley National Park is the largest national park in the lower ’48 consisting of 5,270 mi² s of barren, beautiful desert. It holds the world record for the hottest place on earth topping out at 134 F in 2013. Burros (donkeys) were introduced to the park by gold miners in the 1800’s. Some escaped and […]

Donkeys Demand Trust From Humans.

1. Tame the donkey, prove you are trustworthy.

2. Teach The Donkey To Follow You As A Fair Leader.

3. Never Betray A Donkey

5. Stay On Donkey Time ®

Donkeys Neck Should Never Look Like This

The Dangers of Obesity in Donkeys

Donkeys evolved from the desert. Donkeys living in the U.S.A. are being overfed and fed the wrong foods. Once the neck crest breaks over nothing can be done to repair the neck. Insulin resistance, laminitis, and soon death. If you rescue a donkey with this abuse, get a donkey vet fast. You can save this donkey’s life. Diet changes everything in most cases, test all of your hay, equine analytical lab in the USA to ensure 10% or lower in sugar and protein, no grain, create a donkey track, clean water, salt, and portion control with a slow feeder.

The donkey must live on a dry pasture or paddock for the majority of their life. If we feed the wrong foods such as alfalfa hay, apples, pears, cookies, oats, bread, or munching all day on grass, brush, and trees we will see this in our donkey’s neck. Not to mention death. Death comes next as the donkey evolved from the desert, the donkey was created to live on low sugar/protein hay, clean water.  Round bales for the donkey will cause this too! Hay should be measured and controlled as the donkey evolved from the desert.

Laminitis is a condition in which there is inflammation in the laminae of the foot that connect the pedal bone to the hoof wall. This can progress to rotation or sinking of the pedal bone within the foot. The cause is not fully understood and many factors are involved but obese animals are more prone to develop the disease.”

Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Overweight donkeys often develop a fat, crest neck and fat pads around their tail base. When this occurs the donkey can develop a metabolic disease known as ‘Equine Metabolic Syndrome’. This causes insulin resistance and increased levels of blood glucose (blood sugar) in the bloodstream. In equids, this can lead to recurrent episodes of laminitis or founder. This disease involves inflammation of the white lining or laminar junctions of the feet, extreme foot pain and difficulty walking and chronic abscesses. In severe cases, this is death for the donkey.

Cushing’s

Select What Is Cushing’s

Hyperlipaemia is a condition in which triglycerides (fats) are released into circulation which can result in organ failure and death unless treated rapidly. The early signs of dullness and reduced appetite can be difficult to detect. Hyperlipaemia can be triggered by anything that causes a reduction in food intake e.g. stress, transport, dental disease.

Causes of hyperlipaemia

A number of risk factors have been identified as contributing to this condition. It is known that a female donkey is at higher risk than a male, especially when there are high energy demands such as if she is pregnant or lactating. Overweight and obese animals are at higher risk than those in average condition but even thin donkeys are at risk. Donkeys that have lost significant weight in the preceding weeks should be monitored carefully as they are at a much higher risk of developing this disease. When managing your donkey’s weight, care should be taken not to crash diet as this will put your donkey at risk.

Stress will cause a donkey to reduce its feed intake and can be brought on by many stressors such as:

  • Pain
  • Removal or death of buddy
  • Diet Change
  • Transport
  • Living With Another Animal Who Is A Predator
  • Bad weather
  • Sickness
  • Forced To Live A Life With Constant Stress And Abuse

Action Plan To Lose Weight – DO NOT STOP FEEDING THE DONKEY.

  1. Build Pastures made to exercise, a track
  2. Thyro-L can help along with tested hay low sugar/protein, no pasture and brush to eat and portion control.
  3. Ask your vet to do blood work insulin resistance or Cushings
  4. Have the equine vet dentist come out and examine the donkey’s teeth yearly. Fecal sampling spring and summer.
  5. Engage in an exercise routine
  6. Take Your Donkey For Walks
  7. Make Sure Your Donkey Has Toys and A Buddy To Play With
  8. Clean Water, warm clean water in winter and cool clean water summer.
  9. Test Your Hay 10% Or Lower In Sugar and Protein – Measure for portion control.
  10. No treats, sweets, bread, alfalfa, oats, vitamins or supplements are needed. Do give lose free salt with minerals.

Did You Know Horses, Donkeys and Mules Need REM Sleep?

RIOLILYNAPINGFriends of the Donkeys Whisperer Farm ®

Here are a few photos I captured of Rio our Mammoth donkey sleeping with Miss Lily (quarter horse), Rocket Man our mini donkey is standing guard looking for predators.  “These two had their heads completely flat on the ground, I tried to get the photo to share but donkeys well they have the best hearing and Rio he saw me first.” What a wonderful gift GOD gave us humans to enjoy and share.

Did you know horses, donkeys and mules need REM sleep?

Yes indeed they do and they can’t lay their head down and get this deep REM sleep if they are living all alone without a herd mate.  Another reason to always have a buddy for your equine. I hope you enjoy these precious photos of our beloved equine.
