Donkey Whisperer Farm ® Blog

Welcome donkey lovers, my name is Melody Johnson, I love donkeys. I began my business in 2013 after getting frustrated with the lack of tack and training available for donkeys. I am the voice for the donkey. I train the owner or caretaker worldwide how to tame and train the donkey using resistance-free exercises, never pain. I do not teach clicker training (R). I teach you how to use words, voice, facial expressions, timing and quality exercises that are powerful for you and your donkey to build a fantastic relationship. Donkeys are smart, not stubborn. Donkeys have a photographic memory. Donkeys bond for life to the animal or human they trust. Donkeys are gifts from God.  All of my training series (video on demand) is sold with lifetime access and can be accessed using any smart device, take me to the farm with you.

  2. Donkey hoof abscess video on demand. Print out my shopping list located in the first video.
  3. Donkey Trailer Loading video on demand. Print out my E-book located in the first video to speed up your learning time. I am training you to learn how to become a fair leader each time you step into your donkeys space.

Training a donkey is a bit different from a horse as donkeys are deep thinkers. Donkeys naturally push into pressure using our soft yacht rope halter with strategically placed fiador knots is a game-changer. Once you use our soft yacht rope halter and lead line you will never go back to the flat halter.

How can I clean my tack? Wash in a bucket of warm soapy water and dry. Donkey Whisperer Farm ® soft yacht rope will never shrink is mildew, frail, dirt, rot, and UV resistant. This means that your tack will stay in its original form longer, without breaking, fading saving you money.

Thank you for investing in your donkey,

Memories Of Our Baby Mammoth Donkey Growing Up

Howdy,

Rio our Mammoth donkey is thirteen years old 2019.

Rio age six is 16”1  hands at the withers, not the ears and yes he still has one more year of growing to do.  Rio is a Mammoth donkey 100% donkey no horse he will be full-grown at age seven, the bigger the equine the longer it takes for them to mature.  As the human owner, it is our responsibility to learn what age the equine is full-grown and what it takes to keep them in optimum health mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Miniature donkeys are full-grown at age three.

Standard/burro age four.

Mammoth donkeys age six or seven. Rio was seven as he stands 16’2 hands tall.

Preparation is the key to preparing a donkey to ride.

As a baby mammoth donkey, we took Rio, Lily, and Rocket Man for lots of trail walks to prepare for trail riding.  I highly suggest you do the same if your goal is to trail ride and you have an equine big enough and old enough to carry your weight.   Training the equine to load (trailer and carry weight) without stress is the most important thing to do as you do not want to be trying to trailer load in an emergency.  Any time you can spend with a youngster preparing them for what you want them to do as an adult is time well spent, it’s like laying a foundation on a house to make it strong and solid.

If you have young donkeys, mules, or horses please wait to do riding until they are full-grown as their bones, joints, and mind needs time to grow up.  If you wait for them to physically mature you will have a healthy and happy equine into their senior years if you push ahead too much too fast you can cripple the equine for life.

Rio (mammoth donkey)  two days old.

Rio nine months old – Look how GOD puts all the thick baby donkey fur on to keep him warm in the winter.

“Rio is 9 months old. this is the face I fell in love with a look at those eyes.

Rio with Lily at 1 year old just got home to our farm.

Taking Rio to another farm practicing trailer loading and meeting other horses – Rio is two years old here.

Going for trail walks not rides – Rio carried our lunch and water as he is still too young to ride age 3.

Rio and Melody age 3 (most famous photo) just got a bath and is wearing a cooler blanket after a bath.

Donkey Health Tip – MUD

Here Comes The Rain

If your donkey is laying in mud be sure to get the mud off when it drys. Why? Mud has the potential to give sores to equine. The best way to remove the dirt and mud is a brush in the winter. Be gentle around the eyes and ears. We place sawdust down in the high traffic areas and a place to sleep outside.

How nice would it be if I was able to come to your farm and train you how to train your donkey? Please take a look at Donkey 101 & Donkey 102. I train the owner or caretaker how to not only train the donkey for basic social skills. Learn how to stop the bolt, kick and bite. Prepare for the farrier and more.

Donkey 101 & 102 Video On Demand – Use your smart phone or any smart device on the farm.

1. What is a sign of stress in my donkey?
2. What is a sign of a relaxed donkey?
3. What is the Donkey Hand Shake?
4. What is the 3 second rule?
5. What does walk-on mean? What is the ground tie whoa? (gas and breaks)
6. How can I help a donkey who wants nothing to do with me ever?
7. I have a kicking donkey, how can I help this donkey and stay safe.
8. How can I use the honor donkey to help my donkey learn?
9. Why is my donkey refusing to pick up the feet?
10. Why is play important in training and caring for equine?

Your donkey is waiting for you to learn donkey behavior and how to lead the donkey as a fair leader with a plan. Each time we step into the donkeys world we should be a fair leader. Scanning and aware of how to respond and never drilling or stressing our donkeys out. Stay ON DONKEY TIME ® .

Apples and Pears Are Ripe In Sequim, WA

Please do not feed farm animals without permission. Our donkeys and horses are on a serious diet.

Sadly most people just do not understand throwing apples, pears, bread, grass clippings can make the equine sick and yes even kill the equine. Colic, founder, cushings, laminitis, insulin resistance, abscesses, rotting hooves are all part of over eating and or eating the wrong diet in domestication.

Education creates awareness and awareness will save a life!

Mammoth Donkey

Meet Rio our Mammoth donkey. Rio has been in our life since he was nine months old he turns thirteen this summer.

Interesting fact; Mammoth donkeys are rare as they are man-made. Standard or burro donkeys are the normal size donkeys. Miniature donkeys are man-made too. Rio is my riding donkey he stands 16’2 hands tall at the withers not the ears.

Donkeys are human healers. If you ever get the chance to meet a donkey I highly recommend it. Donkeys are truly gifts from God.

Donkey Love

When a donkey bonds to another donkey, animal or human it is for life. Donkeys are deep thinkers, donkeys feel deeply, donkeys can feel our pain and will even smell our leg after surgery. Yes, donkeys are truly one of Gods most amazing animals.

Donkeys will push the other donkeys out-of-the-way to be first to get our attention when this human animal bond has formed. Years can pass and the donkey will never forget our voice and smell. Never.  I pray that you will share this post to help other people learn about these amazing majestic desert equines, the donkey.

Select Donkey Whisperer Farm to study in our online Donkey 101 & Donkey 102 E-Training Series. Remember we need tools to do any job correctly the donkey needs a halter that fits. We sell donkey halter/lead lines. Our stick and string is used to touch the donkey never to hit the donkey. Please understand the stick and string is used to desensitize the donkey before sticking our head in the kick zone. Donkeys can kick, forward, backwards and sideways with 3 legs on the ground.

When training, I use only resistance-free techniques. I train the owner to use words, facial expressions, voice and timing. NOT CLICKER TRAINING. Training a donkey can be challenging as donkeys do not learn and respond like a horse. Donkeys are visual learners and are seriously into self-preservation. Donkeys require you to think ahead and have a positive plan and you must move and respond On Donkey Time ™ meaning never drill a donkey. Donkeys gravitate towards firm leadership and clear, calm boundaries. In this way donkeys inspire us to cultivate our finest human qualities.

God bless you and your family two and four-legged
